COURSE CONTENT
We will explore the meanings and impact of Enlightenment principles from many aspects, including:
- What changes took place in the nature and purpose of overseas exploration by Europeans?
- What role did monarchs and royal courts such as those of Catherine the Great in Russia, Frederick II in Prussia, Maria Theresa in Vienna and Louis XV at Versaille play in the development and support of Enlightenment ideals?
- Which groups and classes created Enlightenment thought and who benefited from its principles?
- We will explore intellectual travel and the notion of the 'grand tour'
- We will discuss sexual and gender politics in this so-called 'feminine era'
- Finally, in what ways did Enlightenment thought contribute to the revolutionary actions in France in 1789?
