In 2005 Italians celebrated the 60th anniversary of Liberation from Nazi-fascism. This course will provide some answers for all those people who are interested in knowing more about Italian Resistance, how it began, whether it was a civil war or a liberation war, which outcomes Liberation produced, and what Resistance means for contemporary Italian society.
In the first session, we will be introduced to the topic through an overview of Italian political and social background before World War II. This framework will help to describe the first three years of war in Italy and its consequences for Italian civil society until Mussolini's downfall in July 1943.
The core of this course will be represented by the identification of the main actors and events which marked that tragic biennium.
At the end of the course, we will analyse what Resistance and Liberation brought to Italians and discuss whether it is appropriate to talk about resistance in Italy today at the end of the second Berlusconi government.
