CASTLES, WALLS, CATHEDRALS AND MARKETS: AN INTRODUCTION TO ENGLAND'S MEDIEVAL CITIES : A UWA Extension Autumn School Course Other events...
England was known in the middle ages as a land of 'noble cities'. Many English cities today still centre around great medieval buildings and spaces--the castles, cathedrals, marketplaces and walls which marked out urban from rural life. But how and when did these cities start? Who built them, and why? Who lived in them, ruled them, and occasionally rioted in them? An introduction to the study of English medieval urban life--its spaces and places, social structures and conditions, riches and poverty, festivals and rituals.
