ENGLISH: THE WORLD'S LANGUAGE : A UWA Extension Autumn School Course Other events...
English is unique among the world's languages. It has an enormous vocabulary, lots of strange irregularities, and the world's largest number of native speakers and learners. It's also gone through a great deal of change in history, and speakers are often at odds about what sort of changes should happen in the future. Not only that, but English is exerting a tremendous pull on other languages in the world.

We will explore the following questions:

How did English get the way it is? How is English different from other languages? How has English changed over the years, and how is it changing now? What kinds of English are there? What is happening to other languages as English grows in popularity?
