Through the ages the sound of bells has told man the time, comforted him in moments of trouble, warned him of impending danger and accompanied in revelry and worship. Even though the origin of the bell is shrouded in the mists of time, it is certain that bells have played an important part in the lives of diverse cultures for many thousands of years.
In the first of two lectures, Richard Offen describes bells through the ages, their manufacture and explains how they are rung. Illustrated with examples from around the world the talk offers a fascinating glimpse at the history of bells and bell ringing.
The second talk will take place at Perth's icon, Swan Bells, where there will be an opportunity to learn more about the historic art of change ringing, discover the story of the St Martin-in-the-Fields bells now contained in the tower and have a go at ringing a bell.
Richard Offen is a world-renowned bell-ringer and now the chair of the Swan Bells. Share a guided tour and demonstration of our own bell tower as well as the opportunity to ring the bells yourself and learn something of the complexities of change ringing.
The introductory talk will take place in the Hew Roberts Lecture theatre and the second session will be at the Perth Bell Tower.
