Pergolesi’s eighteenth century musical setting of the ancient Latin text, Stabat Mater, depicts the poignant reflections of Mary at the Cross using music of elegance, finesse and melodic beauty. Ever popular, the work has become famous for its use in the soundtracks to the films Amadeus and Jesus of Montreal.
Our fully staged performances are on the two nights before Good Friday, a deeply significant time to reflect on the Crucifixion narrative.
Inaugural Callaway/Tunley Chair of Music, Jane Davidson directs this atmospheric staging of the Stabat Mater which she has produced in both Portugal and the UK to critical acclaim. Several of the singers and actors from the European productions will join forces with a cast drawn from the UWA School of Music and the Perth artistic community.
Expert Baroque violinist Paul Wright will lead the instrumental ensemble, bringing a wealth of experience to reveal the music’s refined beauty and emotional power.
Two gems from the earlier Baroque period, namely Monteverdi’s Cantate Domino and Schutz’s, Es steh Gott auf, frame the Stabat Mater. These are interpreted drawing on the grace and skill of aerial artist Theaker von Ziarno.
