Norooz, the ancient New Year celebration of Central Asia, is steeped in traditions that date back 3000 years. Join us for a very special dinner of delicious Persian dishes as we mark this great holiday and learn a little of those traditions.
The celebration of Norooz has its origin in Zoroastrianism - the world's first monotheistic faith, with its central belief in the power of good to overcome evil. In its homelands it heralds the coming of Spring, the time of rebirth, and is a huge family-centred celebration of life and thanksgiving. It begins with the Spring Equinox, the day the sun passes from the astrological sign of Pisces into Aries and lasts for 13 days. Neither religious nor political dogma has affected the affection people have for this holiday or the tenacity with which they cling to its traditions.
In Iran it lasts for 13 days; here we will take an evening to lay the Haft Seen table (the most beloved tradition of Norooz) with all its ancient symbolism, share the traditional Norooz dinner and enter into the spirit of this most inclusive of holidays.
