The Institute of Advanced Studies and the History Discipline at UWA present a series of ten public lectures attached to a new History Honours seminar. The series aims to present a context for contemporary terrorism by inviting lectures from scholars working on historical and contemporary terrorism movements. The lectures are open to all with an interest in political and social movements and their methodologies and repercussions.
Abstract:
Some notable strands of recent political and intellectual debate in relation to terrorism and its challenges in an Australian context, derive their rhetorical force from particular interpretations of both law and history. This lecture will subject a number of the jurisprudential and historical ideas and assumptions, which have been used either expressly or implicitly to underpin current debates in relation to the Australian domestic response to terrorism, to sceptical interrogation and analysis.
