Robin Haig: DIAGHILEV AND THE BALLET RUSSE
Under the direction of the great Russian impresario Serge Diaghilev, the Ballet Russe between 1909 and 1929 changed the vision of dance, influencing painting, choreography, music and stagecraft. Dance was brought into the 20th century with great works by Fokine, Nijinsky, Balanchine and others, which were new, controversial and innovative. These lectures will explore the social and political background of the times in Russia and Europe and look at the works of the prime movers who were involved in the great works that emerged out of the 20 year period that the company reigned supreme. Lectures will include slide presentation and video clips.
Robin Haig received her initial training in her hometown, Perth, with the
late Linley Wilson. After studying on a Royal Academy of Dancing
scholarship at the Royal Ballet School in London she entered the Royal
Ballet at Covent Garden and toured extensively with that company. In 1962
she returned to Perth, dancing with a concert group of 8 dancers led by
Dame Margot Fonteyn. She later became the Assistant to the late Peter
Darrell of Scottish Ballet and in 1977 was appointed the Artistic Director
of the Western Australian Ballet Company. Since leaving Australia for the
United States in 1981 Robin has been on the Dance faculty at James Madison
U. in Harrisonburg, Va and is currently a dance faculty member at CU,
Boulder's Theatre and Dance department, teaching advanced ballet, pointe
and Variations, History and Philosophy of Dance and Dance in the Twentieth
Century.
