Although the Ancient Greeks had a strong sense of the value of myth they did not necessarily take the tales seriously. Even the Romans, who seem not to have had the same gift of self-deprecation as the Greeks, allowed themselves a glimmer of fun in myth. Beginning with examples from Classical art and proceeding into Classical literature, we will investigate the Greeks' gift for irony: a gift that illuminates their imaginitive and intellectual endeavours.
