The Society of Professional Social Workers and staff of the UWA School of
Music is giving a concert, with some of the state's finest performers to
raise funds to build an orphanage in Sri Lanka. It is at Winthrop Hall,
University of Western Australia on Sunday 27th November at 5.00pm, and
includes a picnic interval.
We realize there have been more recent and appalling disasters since the
Tsunami, however such a concert takes a long time to organise and the need
in this particular case is pressing.
After the Tsunami the village of Batticoloa had more displaced and orphaned
children than any other village in Sri Lanka. These kids need a home to live
in and clothes and books etc for school.
The village has not recovered from the Tsunami. The fishing boats were lost
and cannot easily be replaced. Little of the money initially raised for
Tsunami relief has reached the village. The concert money will be
transmitted by Westpac Bank direct to experienced social workers who will
manage the project and provide ongoing accounts to us until it is completed.
Concert costs are being donated and the entire amount raised will go to the
project.
The programme includes the first performance of a new work (Lament, for
horn) by state living treasure Roger Smalley written for Darryl Poulsen, and
works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Hindemith and Arvo Part. It is suitable for
students. Players are Lorna Cook, Tzvi Freidl, Leanne Glover, Peter Moore,
Darryl Poulsen, Paul Wright, and Roger Smalley and the UWA Chamber Ensemble.
Ticket are Full $25, Concession $20 and Children under 18 $15.
