EXHIBITION OPENING: Official Opening of the "Nya See!" Art Exhibition
|
|
Club Members and their guests are invited to the official opening of "NYA – SEE!" and to meet the artists behind the exhibition!
Wongutha Birni Aboriginal Corporation is delighted to be able to present 'Nya' - a selection of works by Aboriginal artists that allows you to experience the diverse landscape, people and culture of the Goldfields region of Western Australia. The artists are new to the art world but draw on their ancient cultural traditions to bring to you stories of their lives in a contemporary world.
Wongutha Birni is a not-for-profit, community controlled organisation. The Aboriginal community of the Eastern Goldfields suffers from a range of negative socioeconomic factors – poverty, unemployment, incarceration, domestic violence and substance abuse. They have high rates of suicide, appalling health statistics and an average life expectancy of around 30 years less than the general population. In addition the effects of the 'Stolen Generation', racism, negative stereotyping and poor self-esteem have had a devastating effect on the community, resulting in a lack of hope, inspiration and leadership.
Wongutha Birni is addressing these factors by providing a place that is a haven, a place of inspiration, a demonstration of the creativity of Aboriginal people and a place where people of all cultures can come together to discover and explore the things that make us all part of one human race.
All works are available to purchase and artists will donate half of the proceeds back to Wongutha Birni to support ongoing community programs.
