Vanouse's electronic cinema, performances and interactive installations have been exhibited in 18 countries and widely across the US. He is an Associate Professor of Art at the University at Buffalo, NY and is currently an Honorary Research Fellow at SymbioticA where he is working with the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Science on developing: Latent Figure Protocol.
Latent Figure Protocol will utilize DNA sequencing technologies to create representational images in which there is a tension between that which is portrayed and the DNA materials used to generate it. Not simply images of a sequence of DNA in a gel (like a standard DNA fingerprint), but rather a gel containing DNA sequences specifically chosen to create a recognizable, quasi-photographic representation.
In 2004 Vanouse exhibited at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery - The Relative Velocity Inscription Device - a live scientific experiment, in the form of an automated electronic installation, in which he literally races skin color genes from his Jamaican-American family against one another.
In this public talk, Vanouse will show and discuss the trajectory of his practice, culminating in his current project at SymbioticA.
