COURSE: THE CITY OF ALEXANDRIA AND ITS LIBRARY

Alexandria had the unique cultural experience in the ancient world of embracing two gigantic institutions: the great library and the Academy for Scientific Research known as the Mousein. This created the environment for intellectual and scientific creativity with scientists able to find new paths in many branches of knowledge. This course will look at the rise and fall of the library and its revival, the largest cultural project of modern day Egypt.

Amany Mounir Hanna is a Perth-based Egyptologist and recognised leader in her field in Egypt, her country of origin. She has 17 years of field experience in the Giza Pyramids area and has held several high profile positions including appointments as Chief of Inspector of Antiquities, Co-ordinator of foreign joint expeditions for the Egyptian government and official guide for government invited VIPs. Amany has degrees in Archaeology and Egyptology from the University of Cairo. Since immigrating to Australia she has presented UWA Extension courses, researched and organised an Egyptian exhibition for the Museum of WA, organised and lead a tour group to the Ancient Egyptian sites and run courses for school children. Amany is currently working towards publishing an encyclopaedia on Ancient Egypt for children. Her courses aim to promote a greater understanding of Ancient Egyptian civilisation.
