The 2005 Salek Minc Lecture
'University Art Museums and Galleries: Collections, Contradictions and Challenges'
will be presented by Leon Paroissien AM, Founding Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, and a well-known and highly respected spokesperson for museums, galleries and the visual arts.
In the last few years Australian universities have been taking on ambitious museum building programs, giving their extensive collections a new public profile. In his talk Leon Paroissien asks:
What is behind this greater recognition of museums and collections by universities in Australia,
What is the public significance of their increased visibility, and
What challenges attend their current aspirations and more expansive development in the twenty-first century?
Beyond his role as Founding Director of the MCA in Sydney, the many significant positions held by Leon Paroissien include: Founding Director of the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council; Australian Commissioner for the Biennale of Venice; member of the Executive Board of the International Committee for Museums (ICOM) Paris; Editor of 'Art and Australia' magazine; and Founding Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipai, Taiwan (2001-2003).
Admission to the lecture is free.
Refreshments will be served following the lecture.
