Dr Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language, published on April 15 1755, defined the English language for the first time in a modern way. It gives a fascinating insight into the common usage of Engish in the 18th Century and its influence continues down to this day. In celebration of the 250th anniversary of this historic event, this lecture will cover aspects of the dictionary itself, Dr Johnson's life and works, including some of the very latest research, and also provide an opportunity to look at some of the early editions of the Dictionary and of Dr Johnson's other works from the private collection of the lecturer.
John Byrne is a foundation member of the Johnson Society of Australia and a Governor of Dr Johnson's House, London
