Friends of the Library talk : 19th-Century Women Travellers and their World |

Traditionally it has been men’s accounts of exploration and conquest that have received the most press and the wider acclaim. However, they were not the only sex whose extensive travels attracted a wide readership in Victorian Britain. Overlooked until relatively recently, the critical view that late nineteenth-century women travellers were poor carbon copies of male originals has been increasingly shown to be untenable. This talk will map out the travel stories of just a few of these peripatetic late nineteenth-century women.
