Dr Samina Yasmeen: ISLAM AND THE WEST : A UWA Extenson Public Lecture Other events...
Islam has been presented as antithetical to the west and western values since the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. The subsequent attacks in Bali, Madrid and elsewhere have reinforced the idea of Islam and Muslims being on a collision path with the West. To what extent are these understandings valid? How can confidence be built between Islam and western societies? The questions are important for developing an understanding of global politics as well as finding ways in which Muslims and non-Muslims can live cooperatively across the globe. The lecture will attempt to answer these questions in terms of global and local understandings of Islam and its relationship with western societies and ideals.

Samina Yasmeen, B.Sc, M.Sc, MA and Ph.D

Dr Yasmeen is a Senior Lecturer in Political Science and International Relations, School of Social and Cultural Studies, at The University of Western Australia. She specialises in the role of Islam in world politics, and geo-strategic developments in South Asia and the Middle East. She has conducted research on Muslim immigrants in Australia and has written numerous articles on the manner in which Islam interacts with societal and political developments around the world. She has co-edited a book with Shahram Akbarzadeh entitled 'Islam and the West: Reflections from Australia' (University of New South Wales Press, 2005).
