PUBLIC TALK: Artists and Public Collections
In this discussion Australian artists Su Baker, Jo Darbyshire and Kevin Robertson consider the role that public collections may, or may not have played in their appreciation of art and upon their art practice. How does 'being collected' impact on the work of an artist, and what kind of experiences are involved? The panel will consider issues around the life of an artwork once it has left the studio to be preserved and exhibited as part of a public collection. Should public collections reflect a sense of 'this place' and how can that be done in a globalising world? What are the constraints that face museum collections, and how do these impact on contemporary artists? Chaired by John Barrett-Lennard, Director of the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, these and other matters will be discussed by a group of artists whose work is in 'A partial view: Australian art in the UWA Art Collection' currently on display at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery.
The discussion will be followed by refreshments.
