PUBLIC LECTURE: Staging the Past
Abstract:
The reconstruction of the Globe playhouse in London has attracted praise and criticism. Some see it as a vibrant theatrical experience and an opportunity to explore the theatrical past; others dismiss it as a tourist trap.
In this lecture, Martin White discusses the thinking behind theatrical reconstructions, drawing on the Globe and his own work using a full scale, candlelit replica of a Jacobean indoor playhouse. The lecture will be illustrated with unique film footage of performances in candlelight.
