Abstract:

The reconstruction of the Globe playhouse in London has attracted praise and criticism. Some see it as a vibrant theatrical experience and an opportunity to explore the theatrical past; others dismiss it as a tourist trap. In this lecture, Martin White discusses the thinking behind theatrical reconstructions, drawing on the Globe and his own work using a full scale, candlelit replica of a Jacobean indoor playhouse. The lecture will be illustrated with unique film footage of performances in candlelight.

Biographical note:

Martin White is Professor of Theatre and Provost of the Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Bristol, in the UK. He is responsible for steering the research programme at the Globe, and is the consultant on the Royal Shakespeare Company’s current season. His publications include Middleton and Tourneur (1992) and Renaissance Drama in Action (1998), and he has recently completed work on an edition of Massinger’s The Roman Actor. He has directed over fifty plays.

Martin White is visiting UWA as the guest of the Institute of Advanced Studies.
