Profile: Walther Ludwig is one of the world’s most eminent and prolific scholars in Renaissance and early modern studies. His career has spanned Europe and the United States (from 1970-1976 he was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Greek and Latin at Columbia University, New York). Professor Ludwig has over three hundred publications to his name, on classical literature, the history of scholarship, humanism, and Germany history. They include books on Ovid and ancient comedy, and ‘Roman History in German Humanism’ (Römische Historie im deutschen Humanismus, 1987), ‘Ancient Gods and Christian Belief’ (Antike Götter und Christlicher Glaube, 1992), ‘Humanism and Christianity in the 16th Century’ (Humanismus und Christentum im 16. Jahrhundert, 1997), ‘Hellas in Germany’ (Hellas in Deutschland, 1998), ‘Father and Son in the 17th Century’ (Vater und Sohn im 16. Jahrhundert,1999), ‘Religious Poetry of the 16th Century’ (Geistliche Dichtung des 16. Jahrhunderts, 2001), and (as editor), ‘The Muses in the Age of Reformation’ (Die Musen im Reformationszeitalter, 2001). His collected articles in three volumes are being published by Georg Olms Verlag.
