In this two-day workshop Professor Fairburn will describe a new unified cognitive behavioural approach to the treatment of the full range of eating disorders seen in clinical practice (including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and the various forms of atypical eating disorder).
The workshop will open with a brief account of the current standing of CBT for eating disorders. For the rest of the workshop Professor Fairburn will focus on the detailed practical aspects of the new “enhanced” cognitive behavioural treatment (CBT-E) from assessment through to the completion of treatment. Particular emphasis will be placed on novel methods for addressing patients’ concerns about shape and weight. Other topics will include engagement, addressing binge eating and purging, and helping underweight patients regain weight. Newer methods for tackling mood intolerance, clinical perfectionism, core low self-esteem and relationship difficulties will be outlined.
Extensive use will be made of illustrative clinical material. This will include videotaped demonstrations of key interventions. Participants will be encouraged to present their own clinical cases for discussion.
The workshop will be suitable for all those who work with patients with eating disorders.

Engagement and preparation for CBT-E;
Early behaviour change;
Weight regain in those who are underweight;
Early identification of obstacles to change;
The designing of the treatment to suit the individual patient, rather than the DSM diagnosis;
Modification of the over-evaluation of controlling shape, weight and eating, and its various expressions (e.g., body checking, feeling fat); Understand the rationale for addressing, as needed, mood intolerance, clinical perfectionism, core low self-esteem and interpersonal difficulties.
