Evolutionary Enlightenment: A Spirituality for the 21st Century
Andrew Cohen has his headquarters at Foxhollow in Massachusetts, USA, and this is his first visit to Western Australia. He has been teaching throughout the world, and writing about the evolution of human consciousness for the past eighteen years. His ongoing exploration of life’s deeper meaning, in the context of evolution’s fourteen-billion-year history, has lead to the formulation of an original teaching of Evolutionary Enlightenment, a practical science of spiritual transformation, and psychology of liberation.
Passionately concerned about the state of the planet and compelled by a conviction that we can and indeed must evolve to meet the needs of our times, Cohen continually pushes the edge of his own and his audience’s understanding and appreciation of the role we can play in shaping the world’s future.
“Andrew Cohen has arrived at an insight that is crucial for our historical situation. Enlightenment is not a movement out of the everyday world, but is instead a profound entrance into deep participation with the evolution of the universe. Rarely have I encountered such simple, searing wisdom connecting religious ideas about enlightenment with the scientific understanding of an evolutionary cosmos.”
Brian Swimme, Ph.D., evolutionary cosmologist and author of The Universe Story
Biographical note:
Andrew Cohen is widely acknowledged as a leader in a new movement of evolutionary thinkers and activists who see the potential for a shift in human consciousness to change the course of humanity's future. He is best known as the founder of What Is Enlightenment? magazine. Since the publication of its first issue in 1992, it has become one of the fastest-growing spiritual magazines in the United States, garnering awards in the magazine industry
both for editorial excellence and graphic design. Cohen, the guiding force behind the ongoing inquiry of this quarterly publication, directs its mission to help create "a revolution in human consciousness and human culture." Bringing together the voices and visions of cutting-edge thinkers, spiritual leaders, and change agents, Cohen created the magazine to be a forum for the emergence of a philosophical framework for the twenty-first century. Cohen recently has been joined in this endeavor by renowned integral philosopher Ken Wilber in the "Guru & Pandit Dialogues," which forge a synthesis of Cohen's hands-on experience as a spiritual teacher with Wilber's theoretical knowledge. Other noted contributors include: Brian Swimme, Duane Elgin, Elisabet Sahtouris, Don Beck, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Marion Woodman, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Jean Houston, Peter Senge, Huston Smith, Robert Wright, H.H. the Dalai Lama, Father Thomas Keating, Rabbi Zalman Schachter Shalomi, and others.
Selected Publications:
Enlightenment is a Secret (1991, 1995);
An Unconditional Relationship to Life (1995);
Freedom Has No History (1997);
Embracing Heaven & Earth (2000), presents the Five Fundamental Tenets of Enlightenment. The tenets make possible a perspective on human experience that results in profound clarity and authenticity. Living these five tenets gives rise to what Cohen calls the Six Principles of Evolutionary Enlightenment Living Enlightenment (2002), is his most recent book
