CONFERENCE: Western Australian 175th Conference

Sent on behalf of the Constitutional Centre of Western Australia
2004 marks the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Swan River Colony in 1829 by Captain James Stirling. Many have contributed to making Western Australia the rich and diverse society that it is today. These include the Indigenous Australians who occupied the land for more than 50 000 years prior to settlement, descendants of the original Swan River colonists as well as the migrants who travelled far to reach our shores.
This anniversary presents us with an opportunity to consider our shared journey and contemplate what the future may hold. It is a time to reflect on the past, assess the present and consider the legacy we wish to bequeath to those who come after us. The conference seeks to make realistic, sustainable recommendations. Recommendations that are technically feasible, economically sensible, politically achievable and socially acceptable and yet offer a challenge to our ways of thinking.
This conference has evolved a number of independent strands:
History; Indigenous; Heritage; Built Environment; Sustainable Futures; Resources and Technology; Constitutional; Children and Youth; Citizenship.
The conference will be opened by His Excellency, Lieutenant General John Sanderson AC, Governor of Western Australia and closed by the Hon Dr Geoff Gallop, MLA, Premier of Western Australia. The program will include a whole of conference “hypothetical” hosted by Robyn Williams of the ABC’s Science Show entitled WA 2029 Journeys to Sustainability.
