Art that to Westerners appears secular may be imbued with rich meanings that can be labelled 'religious' in Indonesia. What Australians see as a piece of batik cloth may be perceived in Java as the physical form of a spiritual communication with a deity, or the supernatural, as well as a form of self-expression. Speakers and participants will explore different perceptions of creativity and artistic expression, in particular investigating Indonesian ideas about the purposes, meanings, and functions of art.
The symposium will incorporate the Salek Minc Lecture presented by Dr Adrian Vickers on 'Bali and Indonesian Art: History and Significance'. Dr Vickers is Associate Professor of Southeast Asian History at the University of Wollongong.
Saturday 8 May 12.30pm - 5.00pm
Bookings are ESSENTIAL on 6488 3707 as places are limited
$10 students, $15 UWA staff, $20 standard
The symposium forms part of the program of events related to 'Threading Cultures: Balinese Art and Indonesian Textiles' on display at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery until 23 June.
