PUBLIC LECTURE: ROME AND THE CAESARS
Dr Brian Brennan, Macquarie University. Specialist in Late Roman and Early Medieval History.
It was the boast of Caesar Augustus that he found Rome built of sun-dried bricks and left it clothed in marble. The newly developed areas of Augustan Rome near the Roman Forum and on the Campus Martius spoke of the pre-eminence of the Julian family name and advertised the program of Augustus' principate. Later emporers such as Trajan and Hadrian each put his individual stamp on areas of the eternal city through new fora, basilicas, libraries, baths, temples and theatres. In this series of lectures, Brian will discuss the influence of Augustus, Hadrian and Trajan on Rome.
