Political, social and economic developments in Indonesea are reported more and more frequently in the Australian media. What are the issues that will impact on Indonesia's transition fromm dictatorship, through turmoil to a new Indonesia?

Max Lane is a Research Fellow at the Asia Research Centre, Murdoch University. Visiting Indonesia many times since 1969, he has worked with cultural, research and activist groups. He has translated plays of W.S. Rendra and novels by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, including This Earth of Mankind. He writes for the Jakarta Post, Inside Indonesia and Green Left Weekly. His monographs on Indonesia and the Philippines have been published by the Australian National University and Griffith University. He has worked for AusAid in Jakarta and has been Principal Research Officer for the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade.
