John Finlay-Jones is a UWA graduate and tutor. Appointed to Flinders University as a Lecturer in Clinical Microbiology and Clinical Immunology in the School of Medicine in 1977, his more recent appointments at there were as Professor of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and Head (Executive Dean) of the Faculty of Health Sciences (from 1998). He took up appointment as Assistant Director in the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research in Western Australia, in July 2003.
Current research activities include analysis of the harmful effects of sunlight (particularly ultraviolet light) on the skin and especially the immune system, and its relationship to skin cancer. This work has links with industry including the evaluation and development of sunscreen formulations. Other major projects address mechanisms of inflammatory responses in infection and diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, for which industry links include the evaluation of novel anti-inflammatory compounds.
