SUMMARY:Vindicating Plaintiffs or Vindicating Rights?
ORGANIZER;CN=Dr Ana Vrdoljak:MAILTO:ana.vrdoljak@uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Vindicating Plaintiffs or Vindicating Rights? Towards greater
recognition of subjective party interests in the selection of
remedies.\n\nThe award of every judicial remedy\, whether declaratory\,
 coercive\, compensatory\, restitutionary or punitive\, can be said\, in
general terms\, to vindicate the legal rights of the plaintiff.\n\nDoes
the law’s view of vindication accord with what plaintiffs seek by
pursuing a legal remedy? This paper will consider what factors influence
plaintiffs in their choice of remedy and explore whether the law’s
traditional understanding of plaintiff vindication is too narrow. The
paper will call for a more plaintiff-centred approach to judicial choice
of remedy and seek to identify the potential benefits that may result
from:\n\n(a) broadening the criteria applied in remedial decision making
to include factors that influence plaintiff choice of remedy\; \n\n(b)
using a wider range of remedial orders to reflect these factors\; and\,
\n\n(c) other ways of acknowledging plaintiff choice.\n\nThis paper is
work in progress by Robyn Carroll and Dr Normann Witzleb (Faculty of
Law\, Monash University). It forms the basis of a presentation to the
Melbourne Remedies Conference on 11 December 2009 and is be presented in
its final version at the Non-Adversarial Justice: Implications for the
Legal System and Society Conference in Melbourne\, 407 May 2010. In my
presentation I will outline the research question underlying this paper
and the materials we will be examining to answer it. \n\nThe first
article was published as “The Role of Vindication in Torts Damages”
 (2009) 17 Tort Law Review 16 – 44. That paper focuses on damages\,
whereas we are now looking at non-monetary remedies and judicial
 pronouncements. \n\nRSVP by Monday\, 12 October 2009\, 5pm: Ana Vrdoljak

SUMMARY:Research Leaders Program: Managing People in a Research Context
ORGANIZER;CN=Toni Pike:MAILTO:toni.pike@uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Research projects require some particular approaches to
managing people. We will explore the ongoing management of the research
team and allied contributors and particular management issues that may
arise. We will focus on management within the distinctive research

centre or a programme of research\, this is most important. It will make
a real difference to how your group operates.\n\nUpon successful
completion of this module you should be able to:\n* identify the
characteristics of a culture in which research teams identify and achieve
appropriate goals \n* understand the relevance of different leadership
styles in a research context \n* introduce key characteristics of
effective communication and negotiation skills and teams \n* understand
your responsibilities in creating a safe * equitable workplace for the

SUMMARY:Medical Research Seminar Series : LIWA is pleased to present
Prof. Simon Brown from Royal Perth Hospital present this interesting
topic \"Insect Bites & Stings - Why are they so dangerous?\"
ORGANIZER;CN=Robyn Tandon:MAILTO:rtandon@liwa.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Australia is sometimes portrayed as a dangerous place\,
bulging with an array of deadly animals. Envenoming syndromes (toxicity
due directly to the venom) occur\nmost commonly to snake and redback
spider bites on land\nand a variety of jellyfish in the sea. However the
majority of deaths are caused by the body’s allergic response
 (anaphylaxis)to insect bites and stings\; clinically\nsignificant allergy
may affect up to 5% of the population in some regional-rural areas. This
talk will summarise a decade of research by our collaboration that has
improved\nthe way we manage anaphylaxis to insect venoms and envenoming
by snakebite and redback spider bite.\n\nSpeakers: Prof Simon Brown

SUMMARY:Assessment and Feedback
ORGANIZER;CN=CATLoffice:MAILTO:catloffice@uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:A workshop by Distinguished Visiting Teacher\, Dr Chris Rust.
Dr Rust is being brought to Australia by the ALTC.\n\nThe importance of
assessment\, and especially feedback\, and its effect on student
learning\, and students’ approaches to learning\, is widely acknowledged
in the literature. But there is also clear evidence that our current
assessment practices are generally not very good in this regard. This
interactive workshop will start by providing a theoretical model
underpinning the importance of student engagement with assessment\, and
will then proceed to consider case study examples of how this model may
be applied in practice. Participants will be encouraged throughout the
workshop to consider the potential to modify their own assessment
practices\, and the possibility of adopting similar approaches in their
courses.\n\nSpeakers: Dr Chris Rust\, Oxford Centre for Staff and

ORGANIZER;CN=Belinda Ireland:MAILTO:western@atem.org.au
DESCRIPTION:ATEM presents an outstanding opportunity to participate in a
discussion with one of Australia's leading higher education policy
analysts\, Dr Gavin Moodie\, on far-reaching changes in policy and
funding\, and their implications for managers.\n\nMost of the discussion
of the Government's higher education policy released with the 2009 budget
has been on the implications for each institution. But how will the
transformation of the system be managed? Will tertiary education
management also be transformed? This session will consider the
implications for major areas of administration: faculty and student
 administration\, secretariat\, finance\, staffing\, research\, equity and
quality assurance. It will also consider the prospects for stronger
connections between the HE and VET sectors.\n\nREGISTRATION: Program fee

SUMMARY:Data Management and Analysis using PASW Statistics (SPSS) :
School of Population Health - Summer School 2009 unit
ORGANIZER;CN=Fiona Maley:MAILTO:fiona.maley@uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:PASW Statistics (formerly SPSS\, Statistical Package for the
Social Sciences) is a data management and analysis package used
extensively in health research in WA.\n\nIt is available in hospitals\,
universities\, government and other organisations. It is possible to
'teach yourself' with perseverance\, practice and a good learning
guide.\n\nHowever\, most people find it useful to start with short course
that demonstrates the features of the package and allows them to
practice their skills with the support of an expert user.\nCourse
outline\n\nThis two-day course provides an introduction to data
management and statistical analysis for the novice PASW Statistics user.
It is a combination of some expert lectures and lots of 'hands-on'
practice with plenty of support available if required. The presenters
bring together considerable expertise and experience in health-related
research using PASW Statistics and as such can share with you the 'tips
and traps'.\n\nMost of the course makes use of excellent pull-down menus.
However\, participants will also be introduced to writing and saving
syntax. The course would be most suited to those with little or no prior
expertise in using PASW Statistics\, especially students or researchers
who would like to manage or analyse their own data using PASW Statistics
but do not feel confident to get started.\n\nWho should attend?\nHealth
professionals\, health researchers and students interested in gaining an
introduction to data management and analysis using a widely available and
straightforward to use statistical analysis package.\n\nThis is a 2-day
9am-5pm intensive 2 point unit.\nPlease visit our website for further
information Please visit our website for further information including
enrolment details.\n\nSpeakers: W/Prof Judith Finn and Asst Prof
