SUMMARY:Education for World Futures Initiative: Foundation units for
online global learning : School of Anatomy & Human Biology Seminar Series
ORGANIZER;CN=Debbie Hull:MAILTO:dhull@anhb.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:The Seminar\nWe live in a time of unprecedented growth of
science and technology with consequent escalating rates of material and
 social change. Global warming\, war\, terrorism\, the nuclear arsenal\,
population and information explosions\, extreme poverty and affluence\,
resource depletion and pollution\, advanced bionics and genetic
engineering will all impact on what it means to be human in the 21st
century and well beyond. This is the world our students will inherit:
this is the challenge university education must meet.\nEducation for
World Futures directly addresses this challenge. Two\, fully online or
blended teaching foundation units: Humanity in the 21st Century and Human
Action for Global Futures will be established in 2009. These units
bring together the sciences\, social sciences\, arts and humanities to
study the nature and future of humankind. They will provide students with
an understanding of their biological and cultural origins\, their history
and social organisations\, their reliance on and interaction with the
“natural world” and the skills required to make a meaningful contribution
to human wellbeing in a sustainable world environment. \nPlans for these
units have been presented at the World Universities Forum\, 2009\, and
received considerable international interest. UWA has a significant lead
in this area\; we now seek faculty partnerships to offer them locally\,
nationally and internationally. \n\nThe Speakers:\nNeville Bruce is
Director of the Centre for Integrated Human Studies\, School of Anatomy &
Human Biology\, UWA (www.ihs.uwa.edu.au ). His major research and
teaching interests centred on human reproduction and human biology. Over
the past decade he broadened these interests to encompass human wellbeing
from a psychological and biological perspective as a basis for developing
a philosophy and practice for Integrated Human Studies. He had an active
role in establishing the Australasian Society for Human Biology and at an
extra curricular level has been involved in Scientists Against Nuclear
Arms\, the Peace Education Foundation and the WA Alternative Fuels
Association. He is committed to furthering the discipline of Integrated
Human Studies locally and internationally.\n\nSteve Johnson is a lecturer
at the Centre for Integrated Human Studies with the responsibility of
curriculum development. He is currently working on the development of
online first-year units in Integrated Human Studies\, which use various
e-learning technologies to promote inquiry\, collaboration and knowledge
construction. He is also completing a doctorate that investigates
research writing as a process of semiotic inquiry and the use of
diagramming software and portfolios as tools within instructional writing
programs. Steve lives in Perth with his wife and two children and enjoys
a game of golf when he has the time.\n\nSpeakers: Professor Neville Bruce

SUMMARY:The Summer Exercises: making a town from photographs and silence
ORGANIZER;CN=Institute of Advanced Studies:MAILTO:iasuwa@admin.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:For fifteen years\, Ross Gibson has been working with a
remarkable archive of crime-scene photographs that are in the care of the
Historic Houses Trust of NSW in Sydney. The photographs conjure a world
that is simultaneously familiar and strange\, a world where banality and
enigma conspire to upset your commonsense understanding of urban life.
The most recent artwork to come from Gibson’s work in the archive is the
novel \"The Summer Exercises\". Gibson will discuss the philosophies and
design procedures behind The Summer Exercises\, giving a view into the
way a narrative world slowly meshes with the 150 carefully chosen
pictures that he has set aside to make the world that is witnessed in the
novel.\n \n\"The Summer Exercises\" will be available for sale and
signing at the end of the lecture.\n\nSpeakers: Ross Gibson\, Professor

SUMMARY:Scientific Applications of X-ray Tomography in Perth : Workshop
that aims at bringing together people working with\, or interested in the
 technique
ORGANIZER;CN=Florian Fusseis:MAILTO:fusseis@cyllene.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:X-ray tomography is well on its way to become a standard
technique in many scientific disciplines. However\, many aspects of the
data acquisition systems\, data management\, visualisation and analysis
are still developed. The event\, to which all involved/interested are
invited\, shall bring together Perth-based researchers using X-ray
tomography in various fields\, data management people\, experts for
visualisation of tomographic data and their analysis. The idea is to get
to know what 'the others' do\, how they do it\, where the limits are\,
etc. However\, we would also like to network and possibly identify where
we can combine efforts. The program of scheduled talks turned out to be
quite diverse and will comprise a first overview on ongoing
(geo)scientific applications of tomography\, visualisation and
quantification techniques as well as contributions on some available data
acquisition systems. However\, there will still be room for a few more
talks\, so if you are interested in presenting your project\, please get
 in touch asap!\n\nSpeakers: see website

answer. How we harness science and technology\, how we work within a
globalised world and how we reform values and worldviews compatible with
the power that we now have will be crucial not just to human wellbeing
but to planetary futures perhaps for millennia. Our personal lives and
even more the lives of our children and grandchildren are in the balance.
What weight shall we put on these lives?\n\nSpeakers: Prof Neville

SUMMARY:The 2009 Karrakatta Club Lecture: Can we make weak babies strong?
: Recent research findings from Dr Kristen Nowak\, Research Fellow\,
 WAIMR.
ORGANIZER;CN=Institute of Advanced Studies:MAILTO:iasuwa@admin.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Kristen has a long-standing interest in science and has
always wanted to help people. Due to her world-first discoveries into the
genetics of muscle diseases that affect newborn babies\, Perth became the
leading international reference centre assisting families with accurate
diagnosis for these diseases. Unfortunately there is no viable therapy or
cure for these often severe and debilitating diseases\, which can lead to
high emotional costs\, personal suffering and socioeconomic effects
because of the requirement for respirators\, wheelchairs and expert care.
Kristen began her investigations towards finding a therapy for these
diseases whilst working at Oxford University\, and she and the WA team of
researchers continue to be dedicated to finding a treatment for the
families suffering from the diseases. \n \nThe Karrakatta Club Lecture is
presented and organised by the Institute of Advanced Studies at UWA and
the Karrakatta Club\, the first women’s club in Australia founded in
Perth in 1894.\n\nSpeakers: Dr Kristen Nowak\, Research Fellow\, WA

SUMMARY:Journeys of Enlightenment: Changing perceptions of Terra
 Australis
ORGANIZER;CN=Institute of Advanced Studies:MAILTO:iasuwa@admin.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:The European intellectual movement of the 17th and 18th
centuries known as the Enlightenment had a profound effect on the aims
and objectives of European exploratory voyages to Terra Australis or
Terres Australes. The era affirmed the ascendancy of Europe over the rest
of the world and marked the beginning of a new phase in the history of
oceanic exploration. Journeys were undertaken with clearly defined
political\, economic and scientific goals\, political powers taking a
hand in the organization and financing of the expeditions. A serious
voyage was no longer conceivable without a group of scholars\,
specialists in diverse disciplines such as astronomy\, mathematics\,
physics\, natural sciences and so on.\n\nThis talk will focus on the
journeys of 18th and 19th century French explorers\, adventurers and
scientists who undertook the first expansive studies of flora and fauna
of Terra Australis or Terres Australes\, and in particular Western
Australia. The journeys will be placed in the context of the Age of
Enlightenment with its emphasis on the study of the natural sciences and
humanism\, as well as the creation of the new sciences of ecology and
anthropology. It will also seek to show how the political turmoil in
France from the pre-revolution\, revolution\, Empire and return to the
Republic impacted on these expeditions and the fate of the collections
they took back.\n\nThis lecture is part of a symposium jointly sponsored
by the ARC Network for Early European Research\, the Perth Medieval and
Renaissance Group\, the UWA Centre for Medieval and Early Modern
Studies\, and the Woodside Valley Estate.\n\nSpeakers: Myra Stanbury\,
Curator\, Department of Maritime Archaeology\, Western Australian Museum.

 grave
ORGANIZER;CN=Amanda Alderson:MAILTO:amanda@symbiotica.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Whilst fashion and ritual are an integral part of our living
existence\, Pia Interlandi’s research investigates the role of fashion at
the end of life and beyond. Observing ‘eco’ trends in both the apparel
and funeral industries\, transformational processes including
decomposition\, dissolving\, and reincarnation will be explored in order
to create a series of garments that explore the relationship between
garment and [deceased] body.\n\nAiming to embody notions of ‘life cycles’
and the philosophy of ‘cradle to cradle’ design\, the garments and
textiles will be used in conjunction with performance and ritual\,
eventually to be used as proposed alternatives for internment.\n\nPia is
SymbioticA’s latest resident. She is currently undertaking her Doctorate
of Philosophy (Architecture and Design) at RMIT University\, Melbourne.

ORGANIZER;CN=Julie-Ann Gray:MAILTO:julie-ann.gray@uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, visiting Professor Dale Roberts will
introduce you to the world of frogs. Discover the real truth about their
bizarre breeding habits\, the origins of their evolution\, the reasons
behind the extinction of many frogs in Australia since the 1980’s and the
future prospects for conservation of frog diversity in
Australia.\n\nProfessor Roberts has a broad area of research interests in
animal biology. They range from evolutionary biology\, biogeography and
biodiversity\; all with a strong focus on frogs in the South West of WA.
Other areas of research include frog calls\, sexual selection\, mating
systems and frog evolution. \n\nIn his research in conservation biology
Professor Roberts has co-written recovery plans for three threatened frog
species. He has published over 100 papers\, mostly on frogs\, and
recorded the calls of all frogs in the South West of WA\, currently
available on CD from the WA Museum.\n\nProfessor Roberts is a Winthrop
Professor in the School of Animal Biology\, UWA Perth. He teaches
behavioural ecology and contributes to units in introductory biology\,
ecology and conservation biology. He also supervises honours and
post-graduate students working on animal biology research topics. He is

SUMMARY:SymbioticA Friday Seminar > : Ericaamerica: The Cave of Wonders
ORGANIZER;CN=Amanda Alderson:MAILTO:amanda@symbiotica.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Western Australian based studio ericaamerica\, are often
described as creators of new territories between art and fashion.
Creative duo Lucas Bowers and Erica Wardle prefer to remain a little more
ambiguous about their categorisation\, seeing their practice more as the
creation of inhabitable artistic spaces - most often through clothing and
dioramatic installation. Essentially the ericaamerica team explore any
media necessary to bring alternative worlds across the border and into
ours.\n\nThe duo are currently showing their installation \"The Cave of
Wonders\" at the WA Museum\, presented as a sister exhibition to \"Nick
Cave: The Exhibition.\" The show examines and interprets the work of the
legendary singer/songwriter while equally examining the museum's role in
history.\n\nLucas Bowers will discuss the challenges both logistical and
ethical of creating art from anthropological\, historical and zoological
objects and materials\, and of challenging ideas about the role of
museums in modern society\, both within the organisation and
without.\n\nericaamerica have designed costumes for the BioKino group and
ORLAN during their residencies at SymbioticA.\n\n\"A Cave Of Wonders:

SUMMARY:Energy\, Minerals and Climate Change – a healthy mix for
 Australia?
ORGANIZER;CN=Institute of Advanced Studies:MAILTO:iasuwa@admin.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will explore some of the options for the
minerals and the energy industry in light of the extraordinary demands
being called for by scientists preparing for the forthcoming climate
change meeting in Copenhagen in December.\n\nAustralia has long benefited
from being a supplier to the world of energy (coal and natural gas) and
minerals. In the future however\, how will the demands of climate
change\, energy security and energy supply impact on us? For example\,
how will the need to reduce emissions affect demand for our products and
should we be at the forefront of emissions reductions or leave it to
others? Equally\, will the massive demand for energy from developing
countries mean that we can’t afford to mine and process minerals as at
present?\n\nSpeakers: Professor Robin Batterham\, President of the

SUMMARY:The Mirror Test: Humans\, Animals and Sentience
ORGANIZER;CN=Institute of Advanced Studies:MAILTO:iasuwa@admin.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:The mirror test – a classic investigation of consciousness in
animal research – has aspects of a typical pulp science fiction scenario
of alien abduction: an animal is rendered unconscious\, during which time
dye is applied to its face in some way\; when it awakes\, the animal is
given access to a mirror. If the animal then attempts to investigate the
mark in some way\, it is deemed to have passed the mirror test\,
revealing that it recognises the other in the mirror as self. Animals
pass this test by mirroring consciousness as it is experienced by humans
as much as by seeing themselves in the mirror’s image.\n\nThe image of
the mirror also signifies that we often understand animals as mirrors for
ourselves\, constructing images of them that glorify some species in whom
we see qualities we want to possess\, while simultaneously vilifying
others\, often by projecting onto them human faults. Frequently\, then\,
cultural representations of animals will tell us little about the animals
themselves and much about the ways animals become caught up in human
ideology. \n\nThis talk will explore the tension between these two
meanings of mirroring by looking at three science fiction texts that deal
with questions of animal sentience: Connie Willis’s ‘Samaritan’ (1985)\,
Walter Miller’s ‘Conditionally Human’ (1952) and John Crowley’s ‘Beasts’
(1976). Professor Vint will contrast the mirror test’s method of defining
a line between human and animal being with other constructs.\n\nSpeakers:
Sherryl Vint\, Associate Professor at Brock University in St.
 Catharine’s\, Ontario\, Canada.

keynote address by Anwar Ibrahim\, Malaysian Opposition Leader
ORGANIZER;CN=Ihsan Kamarulzaman-Hess:MAILTO:kamari01@student.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, the focus on Islam in Western nations has
become significant\, particularly the way in which Muslims can live
harmoniously in these nations. Key events such as Pope Benedict XVI’s

between Muslims and Christians. It is essential that Muslim and Christian
communities strive to build bridges of understanding and engage in mutual
respect\n\nIssued in October 2007\, and endorsed by 138 Muslim scholars
and leaders\, A Common Word Between Us and You is an open letter to
Christian leaders everywhere. It is an historical and unprecedented
document that further paved the way in developing deeper and more
enriching relationships between people of faith.\n\nThis conference
builds on continuing to engage in the discourse between Islam and the
West. Speakers have been hand-picked to reflect the global nature and
theme of inclusiveness in A Common Word Between Us and You.\n\nProgram of

SUMMARY:Friends of the Library talk : First light: An overview of modern
astronomy and our quest to find the dawn of creation
ORGANIZER;CN=Liz Tait:MAILTO:ltait@library.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:We are now nearing a period in our cosmic time travel that
will contain one of the Universe’s most profound events –the first light
from the first star – the “dawn of creation”. This event will be found
and studied by a new telescope which\, when completed in 2020\, will be
the world’s largest astronomical facility. The telescope is called the
Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and Western Australia is currently the
front-runner in an international competition to host the SKA. The remote
desert of WA\, home to Aboriginal peoples who are arguably the world’s
first astronomers\, may provide mankind with its clearest view of the
first objects created – the seeds of the Universe we see around us today.
In this talk\, Professor Quinn will give an overview of our cosmic
journey - what we have found so far\, what mysteries we have uncovered
and what we hope to find with the new generation of telescopes we are
 about to build.\n\nSpeakers: Professor Peter Quinn\, Director\,

SUMMARY:The Sustainability of Global Ecosystems: Re-evaluating the
 Current Paradigm
ORGANIZER;CN=Institute of Advanced Studies:MAILTO:iasuwa@admin.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:One reason that human activities have so often been
unsustainable may be that the global patterns of productivity are not
understood correctly. The global distribution of marine productivity\,
which is highest in the high latitudes\, has been well-understood for
several centuries\, although this has unfortunately not prevented
over-fishing.The terrestrial pattern of net primary productivity is
currently thought to be the opposite of the marine pattern\, being lowest
at high latitudes and highest near the equator. This is almost certainly
wrong. Reanalysis and reinterpretation of published data on NPP and
related plant and animal properties indicates that ecologically relevant
NPP\, that which is available to plants and animals during the growing
season\, is low at the equator and increases with latitude to a maximum
between 50° and 60° north or south latitude\, which is the same as the
marine pattern. The actual global pattern of terrestrial NPP\, and thus
the constraints on sustainable land use\, are the opposite of what is
currently believed\, which will require a major re-evaluation of
international development and conservation strategies\, as well as a
re-evaluation of much of ecological and evolutionary theory.\n\nSpeakers:

 University\, San Marcos and IAS Professor-at-Large 2009.

SUMMARY:How to think about the structure and dynamics of the brain using
 mathematics
ORGANIZER;CN="Institute of Advanced Studies, UWA":MAILTO:
 iasuwa@admin.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:This talk will be a brief introduction to two topics on which
it has proved possible to learn about how the brain may work using
methods of mathematical physics. It has some relevance to the way in
which theorists approach the problems of the shape\, structure\, and
distribution of galaxies\, and of stellar and galactic dynamics. The
first topic will be how cooperative activity in millions of interacting
nerve cells in the brain leads to the formation of stable patterns of
activity. The mechanism underlying such pattern formation will be used to
explain the seeing of hallucinations\, near-death experiences and
migraines\, and the generation of epileptic seizures. The second topic
will be the effects of fluctuations and correlations of brain activity\,
on the large-scale dynamics. It will be shown how non-equilibrium phase
transitions occur in brain dynamics\, and how this gives rise to scaling
laws that allow the interpretation of various experimental measures of
large-scale brain activity such as local field potentials\, EEG and fMRI
signals\, and the spiking activity of single nerve cells. This leads to a
comprehensive overview of how brain states are generated\, and a theory
for the origins of both random and rhythmic brain activity.\n\nSpeakers:
Professor Jack Cowan\, Mathematics Department\, University of Chicago -

SUMMARY:The Environment in History\; History in the Environment
ORGANIZER;CN=Institute of Advanced Studies:MAILTO:iasuwa@admin.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:When we think of what it is that historians study\, the
environment rarely springs to mind. However\, there is a long tradition
 of historically-informed writing about human-environment relations\, and
in the midst of the rise of the new environment movement in the 1970s and
1980s\, a new sub-discipline coalesced around this theme. Following their
social counterparts\, environmental historians sought to rescue the
environment from ‘the enormous condescension of history’\, and use their
historical knoweldge and skills to solve pressing environmental problems.
However\, amidst the excitement of working in this ‘new’
interdisciplinary field\, environmental historians grappled with issues
of determinism\, holism\, and interdisciplinarity (particularly with the
natural sciences)\, and some began to find their central concern –
whether conceived of as 'nature'\, 'ecology'\, or ‘environment’ –
increasingly problematic. This lecture will explore the diverse ways in
which historians have engaged with the environment\, and ask whether such
engagements throw light on broader issues relating to the scope and
purpose of history.\n\nSpeakers: by Dr Andrea Gaynor\, History\, UWA.

SUMMARY:Black Holes and Galaxies
ORGANIZER;CN=Institute of Advanced Studies:MAILTO:iasuwa@admin.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Professor Reinhard Genzel\, Max-Planck Institute for
 Extraterrestrial Physics\, Garching\, FRG & Department of Physics\,
 University of California\, Berkeley\, USA\n\nLecture Abstract: Evidence
has been accumulating for several decades that many galaxies harbour
central mass concentrations that may be in the form of black holes with
masses between a few million to a few billion time the mass of the Sun.
Professor Genzel will discuss measurements over the last two decades\,
employing high resolution infrared and radio imaging and spectroscopy on
large ground-based telescopes that prove the existence of such a massive
black hole in the Center of our Milky Way\, beyond any reasonable doubt.
These data also provide key insights into its properties and environment.
Future interferometric studies of the Galactic Center black hole promise
to be able to test gravity in its strong field limit. Professor Genzel
will also briefly summarize the cosmological evolution of massive black
holes.\n\nThis lecture is part of the International Year of Astronomy
Lecture Series. This series of free public lectures celebrates the UN
International Year of Astronomy which commemorates the 400th anniversary
of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo. The speakers
chosen for this West Australian series have been selected by the
Astronomical Society of Australia as leaders in their field who each have
an exceptional ability to communicate the excitement of astronomy to the
general public. We invite you to participate in this unique series of
 events.

SUMMARY:Astronomy in the 21st Century with the Square Kilometre Array :
Professor Peter Quinn - UWA Open Day Guest Talk
ORGANIZER;CN=Ian Lilburne:MAILTO:ililburne@admin.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Astronomy is the oldest scientific endeavour of mankind. Over
the past 400 years\, the invention and the development of telescopes has
allowed us to step outside our own solar system to begin a new voyage of
discovery\, back in time\, to the birth of the cosmos. We are now nearing
a period in our cosmic time travel that will contain one of the
Universe’s most profound events –the first light from the first star –
the “dawn of creation”. This event will be found and studied by a new
telescope which\, when completed in 2020\, will be the world’s largest
astronomical facility. The telescope is called the Square Kilometre Array
(SKA) and Western Australia is currently the front-runner in an
international competition to host the SKA. In my talk\, I will give a
broad overview of our cosmic journey back in time – what we have found so
far\, what mysteries we have uncovered and what we hope to find with the
new generation of telescopes we are about to build.\n\nSpeakers:

SUMMARY:IHS seminar: Mateship - iconic or ironic? : An interdisciplinary
examination of of an iconic (?) Australian cultural attribute
ORGANIZER;CN=Karen Connolly:MAILTO:kconnolly@anhb.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:“We value excellence as well as fairness\, independence as
dearly as mateship”\nDraft Constitutional Preamble\, John Howard\, Prime
Minister of Australia\, 1999\n\nG’day mate: it’s the iconic Aussie
greeting\, and mateship is the iconic cultural attribute of Australian
men. But is it or was it ever representative of an egalitarian\,
inclusive\, loyal ideal? Does it survive today in clubs and bars? Does
mateship have a dark side?\nDr Debra Judge looks at primate behaviour to
shed light on the evolutionary origins of mateship\; Nathan Jarvis\,
 author of \"Origin of the Speccies\" (no\, that's not a typo – it's a
book about footy!)\, considers mateship in sport\; and Dr Mark Edwards
speaks about mateship and business ethics.\nAudience discussion is
invited after the presentations. All are welcome and there is no charge
 to attend.

SUMMARY:THE SEARCH FOR HMAS SYDNEY - FROM THE MAN WHO FOUND HER : A UWA
 Extension Course
ORGANIZER;CN=UWA Extension:MAILTO:extension@uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:For 66 years it has been Australia's greatest maritime
mystery\; what happened to HMAS Sydney - was it beaten by the German
raider Kormoran in 1941\, or was there treachery afoot? Why were there no
survivors? And where was the wreck? \nDavid has built a formidable
reputation as the world's foremost shipwreck hunter\, hunting down 21
major ships\, but finding the Sydney proved his toughest challenge. The
search for Sydney took him from the war archives in Germany to the
Kormoran's most senior living officer in Santiago\, and then to
Fremantle\, WA\, and out into the depths of the Indian Ocean. He would
encounter conspiracy theories\, false clues\, wild weather and myriad
mechanical problems\, but\, in 2008\, he would finally record in his
personal log the astonishing words Australia waited decades to hear\,
'HMAS Sydney found!'\nBased on his new book\, 'Search for the Sydney'\,
David tells for the first time how he found both vessels\, capping an
epic 6-year journey. In riveting detail he recounts how he solved the
mysteries which had baffled those who went before him\, and how he pieced
together the story of what really happened on a fateful day over half a
 century ago.\nCourse Code: 094200 Tue 7-8.30pm Aug 25 $33 Bookings

SUMMARY:Professor Martin Fey : “Life in earth: restoring it with
 chemistry”
ORGANIZER;CN=Chris Hale:MAILTO:Chris.Hale@uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Large areas of land around the world\, including Western
Australia\, are drastically disturbed by mining and industry. Sustainable
rehabilitation requires that soil be recreated from piles of waste so
that new ecosystems are functionally stable. Real soil is full of life
and to achieve this state may require as much chemistry as is involved in
the process that produced the waste initially. Paradoxically\, organic
amendments\, besides being more costly\, may be less environmentally
sound than the use of synthetic chemicals to build soil fertility.
 \n\nProfessor Fey has authored or co-authored about 60 peer-reviewed
scientific articles and has presented papers at international conferences
 in the UK\, France\, Poland\, New Zealand\, Mexico\, USA\, Canada\,
Ireland\, Australia\, Tanzania\, Germany and Brazil. In 2000 he convened
the 5th International Symposium on Environmental Geochemistry in Cape
Town\, and formerly served as editor of the South African Journal of
Plant and Soil and on the editorial board of Applied Geochemistry. He has
worked closely with several South African agricultural\, industrial and
mining companies\, has consulted on soil problems with maize production
in the Congo\, has visited Kenya regularly to advise on soil problems in
the tea industry and has investigated bauxite deposits in Guyana.
\n\nAwards include the BP scholarship in Agriculture\, the Soil Science
Society of South Africa medal for best conference paper (four times) and
the Fertilizer Society of South Africa’s Silver Medal for Research (ca
1990) and Gold medal (2007) for teaching\, research and extension
activities. \n\nProfessor Fey served on the South African Soil
Classification Working Group and the National Research Foundation
evaluation panel for Earth Sciences. His recent research activities have
included dryland salinity and water quality in the Western Cape\,
evaluating soils as protectors of groundwater quality\, using coal ash
for liming acid soils and writing a technical book on the soils of South
Africa. His current appointment includes some teaching but focuses on
research into the rehabilitation and reuse of bauxite processing residues
and other mining wastes.\n\nLight refreshments provided. Please RSVP by
 Wednesday 23rd September to Kate Bath\, telephone (+61 8) 6488 5552
