SUMMARY:A Universe for Me? The Anthropic Principle in Astronomy :
International Year of Astronomy 2009 Public Lecture Series
ORGANIZER;CN=Institute of Advanced Studies:MAILTO:iasuwa@admin.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Professor Geraint Lewis\, School of Physics\,
University of Sydney.\n\nHow lucky we are\, finding us living on a planet
with just the right conditions for liquid water to flow on its surface.
More than that\, we live in a universe old enough\, and with just the
right laws of physics\, to forge the heavy elements from which we are
made.\n\nThis 'lucky' situation underpins the anthropic principle\, which
related our very existence to the evolution of the cosmos. To some\, the
anthropic principle is little more than misguided hand-waving\, whereas
to others it tells us something fundamental about the universe. In this
talk\, we will look at the successes and failures of this controversial
idea\, as well as looking to the future\, where some think that the
anthropic principle may be our only guide to one of the major outstanding
questions in physics\, namely how do we construct a theory of
 everything?\n

SUMMARY:Against the grain: Reading the Book of Nature : 2009 History
 Lecture Series
ORGANIZER;CN=Institute of Advanced Studies:MAILTO:iasuwa@admin.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr Philippa Maddern\, UWA\n\nFor medieval writers\,
‘nature’ had an extraordinarily wide range of significance. Profound
generic chasms separated the manorial account roll recording in
apparently passionless detail the monetary value of woodlands\, fields
and meadows\; the medieval romance\, locating knightly ‘adventure’ in
highly fictionalised forests\; the tract on geomancy\, explaining how
 personal and political futures could literally be ‘read’ in the earth\;
or the learned encyclopaedia\, encouraging readers to view the natural
world either as an allegorical figure of wisdom\, or as a
divinely-authored ‘Book’ through which theological truths could be
 discovered.\nMedieval environmental historians\, therefore\, should
ideally read their material—both archaeological or textual—against its
grain\, and in relationship to the various genres of environmental
discourse. This lecture will address such questions as how the 12th–13th
centuries (a period of heavy deforestation) developed the highly popular
genre of forest romances? How and why late-medieval English writers\,
living in a period of apparent climatic turmoil\, produced literary
pictures of a static environment? And what were the connections between
the perception of the natural world as a divinely-authored text\, and the
perception of nature as a result and testimony of Adam and Eve’s fall
 from grace?

SUMMARY:Native Title for Sale? : A public lecture by David Ritter.
ORGANIZER;CN=Institute of Advanced Studies:MAILTO:iasuwa@admin.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Fifteen years since the Mabo decision\, agreements over
resource development with Aboriginal people are entirely commonplace. Why
and what does this mean?\n\n\nIn his new book 'The Native Title Market'\,
David Ritter argues that the native title legislation has given rise to a
de facto market place within which procedural rights are effectively
being traded. Supported by insights from more than a decade of experience
in the field\, David will share his radical interpretation\, challenging
 popular myths along the way.

SUMMARY:“Life in earth: restoring it with chemistry”
ORGANIZER;CN=Chris Hale:MAILTO:chris.hale@uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Large areas of land around the world\, including Western
Australia\, are drastically disturbed by mining and industry. Sustainable
rehabilitation requires that soil be recreated from piles of waste so
that new ecosystems are functionally stable. Real soil is full of life
and to achieve this state may require as much chemistry as is involved in
the process that produced the waste initially. Paradoxically\, organic
amendments\, besides being more costly\, may be less environmentally
sound than the use of synthetic chemicals to build soil
fertility.\n\nProfessor Martin Fey joined the School of Earth and
Environment in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at UWA in
January\, 2009. His position as Professorial Fellow in Mineral Processing
Wastes is funded jointly by Alcoa World Alumina Australia and BHP
Billiton Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd. The main focus of his research is on
the rehabilitation and re-use of residues from bauxite refining.
Previously Martin was Professor and Head of the Dept of Soil Science at
Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Before that he had held academic
appointments in environmental geochemistry at the University of Cape Town
and in Soil Science at the University of Natal\, where he obtained his
PhD in 1976. He has conducted postdoctoral research in soil mineralogy at
Texas A&M University and spent a sabbatical doing both teaching and
research at the University of Georgia\, USA in 1985. He has published and
supervised postgraduate research in a range of fields including soil
 chemistry\, clay mineralogy\, plant nutrition\, soil classification\,
soil genesis and ecology.\n\nFor catering purposes\, please RSVP

SUMMARY:SymbioticA Friday Seminar : Awash in Spatial Information:
 Promise\, Limitations and Controversy
ORGANIZER;CN=Amanda Alderson:MAILTO:amanda@symbiotica.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:What is spatial information? How is it constructed\,
maintained and controlled? With the current social valence of spatial
information\, it is critical that we have an understanding of its
continuing development so we can leverage and critique it effectively.
This talk will seek to deeply engage the audience by way of small group
conversations. Questions will focus on issues of deep contention
 (privacy\, access\, control\, etc.)\, cultural encoding\, possibilities
for spatial information and those of interest to the group.\n\n\nE. J.
Neafsey is a Ph.D Candidate in the Environmental Information Science
concentration at Cornell University. He completed his undergraduate work
at Cornell in January 2005 and received his M.S. degree there in May
2008. He has taught geospatial information science and sustainable
agriculture as part of his program at Cornell. Previous research focused
on proximal sensing using diffuse-reflectance near-infrared spectroscopy
for the estimation of key soil properties to soil classification and
survey\, in situ\, in western and central New York. He is currently
developing a spectral database for soil samples in southern New England
and prediction models for key soil properties for archived\, field
benchmark and subaqueous soils in the region. Locally\, he is working
with the Western Australia Department of Agriculture and Food to update
soils maps in the Wheatbelt using field\, radiometrics and terrain data

SUMMARY:Institute of Advanced Studies presents : 2009 Ian Constable
Oration: Prof Anne Kelso on The 21st Century Pandemic
ORGANIZER;CN=Martin Swann:MAILTO:iasuwa@admin.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:In 2009 we have witnessed the beginning of the first
influenza pandemic in 40 years.\n\nThis event reminds us that\, despite
the advances of the 20th century\, we are still vulnerable to the
medical\, social and economic effects of infectious disease. Although we
have co-existed with influenza viruses throughout recorded history and
have developed vaccines and antiviral drugs to control them\, their
remarkable capacity for change means that the future evolution of
influenza viruses – and even the progress of the present pandemic –
cannot be predicted.\n\nMuch has been learned about the characteristics
of influenza viruses that underlie this capacity for change and the
emergence of new variants from animal reservoirs. The three pandemics of
the 20th century\, in 1918–1919\, 1957 and 1968\, have also shown us how
new influenza viruses emerge and spread through non-immune human
communities. But pandemics are also shaped by the world in which they

SUMMARY:The 21st Century Pandemic : Ian Constable Lecture 2009
ORGANIZER;CN=Institute of Advanced Studies:MAILTO:iasuwa@admin.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:In 2009 we have witnessed the beginning of the first
influenza pandemic in 40 years. This event reminds us that\, despite the
advances of the 20th century\, we are still vulnerable to the medical\,
social and economic effects of infectious disease. Although we have
co-existed with influenza viruses throughout recorded history and have
developed vaccines and antiviral drugs to control them\, their remarkable
capacity for change means that the future evolution of influenza viruses
 – and even the progress of the present pandemic – cannot be
predicted.\n\nIn 2009\, we have a unique opportunity to use modern
surveillance\, communication and analytical tools to study this pandemic
as it evolves\, particularly in the southern hemisphere as the new virus
competes with seasonal influenza viruses during our winter. Lessons from
this experience will guide public health responses in subsequent seasons
and improve our ability to respond to the inevitable pandemics of the

SUMMARY:Next CLR Seminar: Prof. Hans Lambers\, Plant Biology :
\"Phosphorus nutrition and growth strategies of plants in a global
 biodiversity hotspot\"
ORGANIZER;CN=Ursula Salmon:MAILTO:ursula.salmon@uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Centre for Land Rehabilitation Seminar\, School of Earth and
 Environment\, FNAS. - All welcome!\n\n\nProf. Hans Lambers: \"Phosphorus
nutrition and growth strategies of plants in a global biodiversity
hotspot\".\n\nAbstract:Some of the most ancient parts of the Earth’ crust
can be found in Western Australia\, where the climate there has been
oceanically buffered\, and the landscape has not been glaciated for over
90 million years. The southwest of Western Australia is also one of the
world’s hotspots of biodiversity\, with plant diversity increasing with
decreasing soil [P]. This environment offers a unique opportunity to
study plant adaptations to nutrient-poor conditions.\n\nA relatively
large proportion of the species from the very phosphorus-poor soils in
Western Australia cannot produce a symbiotic association with a
mycorrhizal fungus\, including most species belonging to the Proteaceae
and Cyperaceae. Instead\, many species in these families produce root
clusters\, which release large amounts of carboxylates\, whose role is
that of mobilisation of phosphorus (P) and micronutrients.\n\nLeaf P
concentrations in south-western Australia are amongst the very lowest in
the world. Leaf N concentrations are also low\, but relatively less so
than leaf [P]\, and hence foliar N:P ratios are relatively high\,
compared with global datasets. Very high values for leaf mass per unit
area\, compared with data for plants elsewhere in the world\, only partly
account for low leaf [P]. For reasons that remain to be explored
further\, leaves of many south-western Australian plants are capable of
functioning at very low leaf [P]\, including exhibiting relatively high
rates of photosynthesis.\n\n\nSpeakers: Prof. Hans Lambers\, School of
 Plant Biology

ORGANIZER;CN=Karen Connolly:MAILTO:kconnolly@anhb.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:“The great secret that all old people share is that you
really haven't changed in seventy or eighty years. Your body changes\,
but you don't change at all. And that\, of course\, causes great
confusion.” Doris Lessing \n\nA fast growing demographic is people in
their nineties\, but these people are the least likely to be happy with
their quality of life. What values do Australians hold about caring for
our elders? What can we look forward to\, as an ageing community\, and as
individulas? Professor of geriatric medicine Leon Flicker dispels some
myths about ageing\; physiotherapist Faye Bastow shares professional and
personal insights into aged care\; and Jenny Davis speaks about tapping
a rich vein of wisdom and story through Agelink theatre.\nAudience

SUMMARY:Raine Lecture - Professor John Forrester\, University of Aberdeen
: Sight-threatening Uveitis: Causes and treatment of a neglected disease
ORGANIZER;CN=Lyn Ellis:MAILTO:lellis@raine.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:John Forrester is a distinguished and accomplished clinical
scientist with an outstanding record of international achievement in
 Ophthalmology.\n\nSight-threatening intraocular inflammation affecting
the posterior segment of the eye may be predominantly located in the
peripheral retina and vitreous (intermediate uveitis) or postequatorially
where it manifests as inflammation of the retina\, retinal vessels and/or
optic nerve with cellular infiltration of the choroid and retina and
edema particularly at the macula. Involvement of the macula is the main
cause for visual loss. Experimental models of posterior uveitis have
revealed much concerning the mechanisms of inflammatory cell damage to
the retina. In particular\, transgenic and gene deletion models of
inflammation have allowed an understanding of how immune privilege in the
posterior segment of the eye is disrupted and how the disease (uveitis)
is initiated. Importantly\, this has led to the development of new
treatments with novel immunosuppressants and 'biologics' and the promise
of cell-based therapies which may allow customized therapies tailored to
the individual's inflammatory profile.\n\nSpeakers: Professor John

ex vivo perfusion of an isolated human placental cotyledon it takes on
average 20–30 minutes to set up stable perfusion circuits for the
maternal and fetal vascular compartments. In vivo placental tissue of all
species maintains a highly active metabolism and it continues to puzzle
investigators how this tissue can survive 30 minutes of ischemia with
more or less complete anoxia following expulsion of the organ from the
uterus without undergoing severe damage.\n\nSpeakers: Professor Emeritus

Professor Klaus Ploog\, Paul Drude Institute\, Germany
ORGANIZER;CN=Institute of Advanced Studies:MAILTO:ias@uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Energy and materials have a long-standing and mutually
enriching relationship. In this lecture Professor Ploog will show that
materials science offers unique possibilities to improve key properties
of energy supplies. In the long term\, materials science will help to
promote the use of revolutionary new energy resources\, such as hydrogen
and fusion\, and of new energy storage technologies.\nThis lecture is

SUMMARY:Friends of the Library talk : Algeria’s struggle for independence
 from French rule
ORGANIZER;CN=Liz Tait:MAILTO:ltait@library.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:From the establishment in 1605 of Port Royal in what is now
Canada\, France’s colonial empire ebbed and webbed in size and
significance over the following centuries. If the French empire has a
birth date it also has a date when its death became inevitable: 1954\,
the battle of Dien Bien Phu in Indochina. Whereas around that time some
countries got their independence relatively peacefully (equatorial Africa
for instance)\, a traumatic ‘War without a name’ was waged both on
Algerian and French soils. After a brief survey of the extent of the
French colonial empire\, this lecture will look at the decolonisation
process in Algeria\, its actors\, main events\, and legacy in today’s
 France.\n\nSpeakers: Hélène Jaccomard

SUMMARY:UWA Business School and Alcoa Visiting Professor Series - Dr Mary
Gentile - Public Lecture : Giving Voice to Values: transforming the way
we think about\, talk about\, and implement business ethics
ORGANIZER;CN=Kylie Weston:MAILTO:kylie.weston@uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Despite four decades of good faith effort to teach Ethics in
business schools\, readers of the business press are still greeted on a
regular basis with headlines about egregious excess and scandal. It
becomes reasonable to ask why these efforts have not been
working.\n\nGiving Voice to Values (GVV) is an innovative approach to
promoting a higher level of integrity in education and the workplace\,
pioneered by former Harvard Business School faculty Dr Mary Gentile. GVV
is not about persuading people to be more ethical. Rather GVV starts from
the premise that most of us already want to act on our values\, but that
we also want to feel that we have a reasonable chance of doing so
effectively and successfully. This curriculum is about raising those
odds.\n\nGVV\, recently cited in the New York Times article “Is It Time
To Re-Train B-Schools?” (March 14\, 2009)\, is currently being piloted in
over 100 sites from Yale to INSEAD to MIT to the Indian School of
Business to the University of Western Australia – as well as business
settings and non-profit organisations.\n\nDr Gentile will explain the
rationale and principles behind this empowering approach to developing
the ethical muscles – the skills and confidence – required to voice and
act on our values.\n\nBIOGRAPHY\nMary C Gentile\, PhD is Director of
Giving Voice to Values www.GivingVoiceToValues.org launched by The Aspen
Institute and Yale School of Management\, with ongoing support from
Babson College. This pioneering curriculum for values-driven leadership
has over 100 pilot sites globally and has been featured in New York
Times\, Financial Times and Harvard Business Review. Gentile\, faculty at
Babson College and educational consultant\, was previously at Harvard
Business School. She holds a BA from The College of William and Mary and
PhD from State University of New York-Buffalo.\n\nRSVP ESSENTIAL\nKylie

SUMMARY:SymbioticA Friday Seminar : Synthetic Kingdom
ORGANIZER;CN=Amanda Alderson:MAILTO:amanda@symbiotica.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:SymbioticA Friday Seminar > Synthetic Kingdom\n\nWhat does
design have to offer to a biotech revolution? \n\nDaisy Ginsberg uses
design to explore the implications of emerging and unfamiliar
technologies\, science and services. This includes creating compelling
narratives that allow us to question our unprecedented future\, using
design to open up new thought areas and unravel the complexity of
invisible science. Over the last 18 months Ginsberg has been exploring
how the two very disparate scales of molecular science and human design
interact. At the Royal College of Art\, London\, she began researching
synthetic biology\, the application of engineering principles to
biology\, the abstraction of the chaos of life into standardised
components and systems. Daisy has now moved into the lab\, designing a
Synthetic Biology Protocol for SymbioticA during her residency.\n\nPrior
to the MA Design Interactions at the Royal College of Art\, Ginsberg read
Architecture at Cambridge University\, worked in urbanism and spent a
year at Harvard learning about narrative and design research. Her time at
the RCA was spent exploring what design - integral to the developments of
the Industrial and Information Revolutions - has to ‘offer’ to a Biotech
 Revolution. \n\nMore information: http://www.daisyginsberg.com/ \n\nAll

DESCRIPTION:Everyone you have ever known will die. And so will
you.\n\nAnd yet we dance in the looming shadows of mortality\, we dance
and we talk and we eat and we argue. We read books. We care for people.
We buy houses. We plant trees and we start to drive and we learn how to
make milk frothy. Because something\, somewhere in the middle of it all
has to matter. As our seconds and minutes and days slip by\, something
has to be important. and who are we to giggle and point and sneer at what
others have found to care about? Who is to say what is beneath us\, what
is not worthy of our hearts?\n\nEverybody needs something to hold when it
gets dark\, so who am I\, who are any of us\, to point at anything and
call it facile or redundant or stupid or rubbish?\n\nEven when it quite
clearly is.\n\nA new stand up show about finding something important in
 an ocean of twaddle.

ORGANIZER;CN=Eleni Stephanou :MAILTO:estephan@biz.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:The lecture is entitled Empirical Model Discovery. In it
Professor Hendry re-interprets model evaluation as discovering what is
wrong\, robust statistics as discovering which sub-sample is reliable\,
and model selection as discovering which model best matches the
 criteria.\nAutomatic methods enable formulation\, selection\, estimation
and evaluation on a scale well beyond the powers of human intellect\,
including when there are more candidate variables than observations.
Hendry will explain how major recent developments facilitate the
discovery of models\, despite the high dimensionality\, non-linearity\,
inertia\,\nendogeneity\, evolution\, and abrupt change characteristic of
economic data that interact to make modelling so difficult in practice.
Live computer illustrations using Autometrics show the remarkable power
and feasibility of the approach.\n\nFor more information on the lecture

SUMMARY:The ‘liquid frontiers’ of Islamic art: Interaction and exchange
in the medieval period : A free lecture by Stefano Carboni\, 11th
Director of the Art Gallery of Western Australia
ORGANIZER;CN=Institute of Advanced Studies:MAILTO:ias@uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Islamic art can be defined with an elaborate sentence as the
art produced for the most part by (but by no means exclusively) Muslim
artists and craftsmen beginning from the 7th century CE in those areas of
Asia\, Africa\, and Europe that were for the most part ruled by Muslim
leaders and which was produced for the most part (but by no means
exclusively) for Muslim patrons and a general Muslim clientele. Such an
awkward definition is meant to emphasize that there existed a common
artistic vocabulary extending beyond those facets and thus allowing a
collective understanding of architectural forms\, object shapes\, surface
 decoration\, and calligraphic patterns.\n\nSince East/West is plainly a
geographic dichotomy\, it is the boundaries of Islamic art that become
particularly germane to this issue. This is one of the most peculiar\,
stimulating\, and exhilarating aspects of this field because these
boundaries constantly changed and represented porous frontiers by way of
which there were constant exchanges\, interactions\, and cross-effects
both within the confines of the Islamic world and between Europe and Asia
through the intermediary of the giant puzzle that is Islamic art.\n\nThis
lecture is free and open to the public\, no RSVP required.\n\nThis event
is co-sponsored with:\nPerth Medieval and Renaissance Group\; Network for
 Early European Research\; Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies\;
Faculty of Architecture\, Landscape and Visual Arts\; UWA Cultural
Precinct\; and the Centre for Muslim States and Societies at The
 University of Western Australia.

SUMMARY:Can tea really do that? : CWR Seminar
ORGANIZER;CN=Sarah Laborde:MAILTO:laborde@cwr.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION: Coffee and tea are both consumed in most countries.
Worldwide\, approximately three cups of tea are drunk for every cup of
coffee. Almost three quarters of tea consumption takes place in
developing countries with tea drinking dominating throughout Asia\, the
former Soviet Union and Africa. In contrast most coffee consumption takes
place in developed countries.\n\nTea is refreshing beverage and the basis
of much social interaction. In recent years the health benefits of tea
have been documented . We have reviewed the literature and have conducted
our own research projects. Studies based at Curtin have shown the value
of tea in the prevention of prostate and ovarian cancers and ischaemic
stroke. UWA is undertaking research into breast cancer and other
cardiovascular benefits.\n\nCurrent evidence on the health effects of tea
does not meet the NHMRC's level for clinical practice guidelines. Tea
consumption is possibly protective against several cancers\, stroke and
cardiovascular disease. Tea is a great beverage as a part of a healthy
diet and as a superior choice to coffee despite the fact that levels of
intake cannot currently be recommended.\n\n“Would you like tea or
coffee?” The public health answer is - we would like tea please.

SUMMARY:Questioning Hanrahan: Environmental optimism and realism in the
 21st century : A lecture by by Richard Hobbs\, Australian Laureate\,
 Professor of Restoration Ecology\, UWA
ORGANIZER;CN="Institute of Advanced Studies, UWA":MAILTO:ias@uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:The Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson and the Institute
of Advanced Studies invite you to a public lecture by Australian Laureate
Professor Richard Hobbs.\n\n“We’ll all be rooned\,” said Hanrahan in the
classic Australian bush poem by John O’Brien. Hanrahan saw ruination in
the vagaries of the Australian climate – no matter what happened\, it was
sure to turn out badly. Environmental thinking at the start of the 21st
century often takes on a Hanrahanian feel\, with predictions of species
loss\, ecosystem collapse\, runaway climate change and the like. Often
this leaves people despairing that the problems are too vast to do
anything about. There is another way to view our current situation\, in
which the many positive steps that can and are being taken to manage and
repair our environment can be celebrated and encouraged. The field of
ecological restoration and the allied science of restoration ecology is
undergoing a shift in scope and level of activity both in Australia and
elsewhere. Ranging from restoration of local patches of bush through to
attempts to restore and revitalise entire regions\, these efforts can add
up to a large counter-current working against the negative influences
we’ve all come to expect. There is potential for an optimistic view of
the future tempered by a dose of realism concerning the challenges to be
faced. \n\nThis lecture is co-sponsored by the University Club at
UWA.\n\nThe lecture will be followed by refreshments. \n\nThis lecture is
free and open to the public. \n\nPlease RSVP your attendance to 6488 1340
 or ias@uwa.edu.au.

DESCRIPTION:Michelle Outram\, Simon Wise\, Oron Catts\, Tania Visosevic
and Cat Hope\, delegates on the WASh Program (Western Australia\,
Shanghai) will share stories on their recent visit to Shanghai\, discuss
future plans for the program\, what it is and why they’re doing
it.\n\nThe aim of the WASh Program\, established by the Australia-China
Institute for Culture and the Arts (ACICA)\, is for West Australian
media\, electronic and interdisciplinary artists to develop their
practices\, profiles and arforms by establishing links and exchanges with
a variety of institutions\, organisations and local artists in Shanghai.
The vision is a low-cost\, long-term cultural and artistic bridging
program.\n\nWASh 2009\, funded by the Department of Culture and the
Arts\, consisted of a delegation of six artists/artsworkers (Cat Hope\,
Oron Catts\, Tania Visosevic\, Sam Fox\, Simon Wise & Michelle Outram)
visiting Shanghai with ACICA Director Sheng Liang in September. During
the visit\, the group presented seminars/talks and attended meetings and
social events\, successfully establishing connections with
 organisations\, institutions and artists.\n\nBuilding from this success\,
WASh 2010\, will be a 'pilot' program of linked artist residencies\,
lectureships and the presentation of works made possible through support
from partner organisations in Shanghai and Australian funding.\n\nAll
 welcome. \n\n\nSpeakers: Michelle Outram\, Simon Wise\, Tania Visosevic\,

SUMMARY:Children’s rights in Australia. : 20 years after the Convention

DESCRIPTION:A free public lecture by Chris Sidoti\, Human Rights Lawyer\,
Activist and Teacher.\n\nThe United Nations Convention on the Rights of
the Child was ratified by Australia 19 years ago after intense campaigns
for and against\, especially in Western Australia. Those that believed in
the Convention saw it as the final resolution to all of the problems
Australian children encountered\, while others claimed it would destroy
families and ultimately ruin children’s lives. Today\, 19 years after it
was adopted\, we can assess whether the Convention has achieved what it
set out to accomplish or if any of the fears of its critics have been
 realised.\n\nThis lecture\, held during 2009 Children’s Week\, is
sponsored by Commissioner for Children and Young People and The
 University of Western Australia.\n

SUMMARY:Uranium and nuclear energy in WA: technical\, security\,
 economic\, social points of view
ORGANIZER;CN=W/Professor Dongke Zhang:MAILTO:dongke.zhang@uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:World attitude to the use of civil nuclear powered
electricity generation is changing toward a majority being in favour.
\n\nThis is manifested in countries like Finland where the new European
convoy has commenced and Sweden\, UK\, USA and many others are dusting
off energy policies\, reversing past restrictions and now positively
promoting the building of new nuclear capacity.\n\nAustralia has three
recognised electricity distribution grids: Eastern States (NEM)\, South
West of WA (SWIS) and the Pilbara. Will the demand for growth in each of
these grids be open to nuclear generation by the latter part of the
2020s?\n\nThe energy debate needs to start now. Past debates have been
dominated by interpretations of technology but the way forward must
include as much sociology as technology.\n\nDr Duncan believes
Australia’s first reactor will be delivering electricity into the NEM
grid by 2026.\n\nWhat is the role of tertiary educational institutions in
this much needed energy debate?\n\nThis lecture is presented by The
Energy and Minerals Initiative and the Institute of Advanced Studies at
the University of Western Australia.\n\nSpeakers: Dr Ian Duncan DPhil

SUMMARY:SymbioticA Friday Seminar : Oil Spill Emergency off WA Coast
ORGANIZER;CN=Amanda Alderson:MAILTO:amanda@symbiotica.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:It is over two months since a West Atlas mobile offshore
drilling unit leaked oil about 250 kilometres north of Truscott\, and 690
kilometres west of Darwin. The fourth attempt at plugging the leak has
been postponed due to equipment failure. The leak is considered to have
covered 45\,000 square kilometres of ocean. \n\nFollowing a mass protest
in the city of Perth on Friday morning at 11am\, the WA Marine
Co-ordinator of the Wilderness Society\, Dr Jill St John\, will present a
paper outlining the enormity of the leak\, dangers to the marine life in
the vicinity and what individuals can actually do to make a
difference.\n\nDr Jill St John joined the Wilderness Society in 2008 as
the Marine Co-ordinator in WA. Jill has a passion for all things marine\,
especially fish. \n \nStudying and working at both Sydney and James Cook
Universities\, Jill specialised in the ecology of coral reef fishes. She
spent two years researching coral trout in Okinawa\, Japan at Seikai
National Fisheries Institute before moving to Perth to work as a Research
Scientist in the Department of Fisheries. “In Perth I researched iconic
temperate reef fish for eight years and often told both recreational and
commercial fishers that my real clients were the fish.” Tired of the
never-ending blamebrawls between “rec” and “commercial” fishers\, Jill
decided to leave fisheries to campaign for better marine protection in
WA. \n\nWith its huge coastline and small population\, WA has escaped the
marine problems of the more populated east. However\, the recruitment
failure of the famous rock lobster fishery and the recent oil and gas
leak suggests WA is catching up quickly. \n\nAll welcome.\n\nFLASH MOB
 PROTEST\nWhen: This Friday Oct 30th@11am \nWhat: Dress in black\, grab a
sign & join in protest the beat until it stops= flash mob protest\nWhere:
APPEA office\, 190 St. Georges Tce.\, Perth City.\nWhy? To say Never
Again… to the oil and gas industry & gain better protection for Kimberly
marine life!\n \nPlease send this around to friends/family/colleges and
anyone who is interested! \nAnd print one out for a notice

SUMMARY:Astronomy and the SKA : An exhibition celebrating the
International Year of Astronomy 2009 in the new Science Library
ORGANIZER;CN=Jenni Wallis:MAILTO:jenni.wallis@uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:The Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences\, in conjunction
with the newly launched International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research
(ICRAR) presents an exhibition celebrating 400 years of astronomy.\n\nThe
exhibition includes:\n\n* Astronomical images from optical telescopes
(The World at Night exhibition) and images generated through the use of
radio telescopes.\n\n* A scale replica of the proposed Square Kilometre
Array (SKA) radio telescope dish\n\n* A 12\" (30cm) Meade reflector
optical telescope.\n\n* A multimedia presentation incorporating: an
animation of the proposed SKA site in the Murchison region\; \"First
Light: Eyes to Telescopes\" movie with ICRAR Director Professor Peter
Quinn\, produced by the SPICE team\; ICRAR SKA trailer\; and a collection
of images of astronomical objects taken at infrared\, optical\, radio and
x-ray wavelengths.\n\n* The stunning 22-metre long Cosmic Ribbon showing
the evolution of the Universe from the Big Bang to the current day. It
displays the content of the Universe at different times\, the time and
“cosmic distance” at different stages in the evolution\, as well as the
limits that can be achieved by various kinds of telescopes. Walk along
the banner to go back in time and witness key events in the history of
our Universe such as first light\, the birth of stars\, and the formation
of galaxies.\n\nThe exhibition is open now and will run until Friday 20th
November in foyer of the UWA Science Library.\n\nThe Science Library is
located at the corner of Myers Street and Parkway\, map reference http:

SUMMARY:Long-term studies of California grassland: lessons for
 restoration : CWR Seminar
ORGANIZER;CN=Sarah Laborde:MAILTO:laborde@cwr.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:A 27 year study of annual grassland on serpentine soils in
northern California elucidated the roles of rainfall variation and
disturbance in determining grassland composition and dynamics. The
abundance of individual species was found to vary markedly over the study
period\, in part tracking changes in annual rainfall amounts and
distribution\, but also varying in relation to animal disturbance and
grazing. This led to large variations in species composition both through
time and spatially. Of particular importance were the findings that
invasion by non-native grasses was episodic and related to above-normal
rainfall amounts and that some species which were relatively uncommon in
the grassland became dominant under some conditions. These dynamics would
not have been elucidated without long-term study. The relevance of the
dynamic nature of the grassland\, the spatial heterogeneity and the
functional roles of individual species are considered within the context
of restoration. In particular\, the question of setting restoration goals
in relation to a reference system is explored. Clearly\, the objectives
of restoration need to take into account both the dynamic nature of
ecosystems and the need to build functional resilience in the system.
Similarly\, the definition of a reference state needs to recognize the
possibility that species which are not abundant at one particular time
may nevertheless be important components of the system under changed
conditions.\n\nSpeakers: Richard Hobbs\, Professor of Restoration

SUMMARY:Friends of the Library talk : Designing a library for the 21st
 century
ORGANIZER;CN=Liz Tait:MAILTO:ltait@library.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:When the University completed Stage 1 of the new Science
Library earlier this year it was received with overwhelming enthusiasm by
the students. Within weeks\, it had its own Facebook fan club and a music
video singing its praises had had thousands of hits on YouTube. How can a
building generate so much enthusiasm?\n\nJohn Arfield\, the University
Librarian and Director (Information Management) will give an insight into
the thinking that went into the design of the building and how\, in a
digital age\, a library building can still be at the heart of a modern
university. Stage 2 will be completed shortly and a tour of both parts of
the building will be included in the evening.\n\nSpeakers: John Arfield\,

SUMMARY:Public Lecture on Fusion : The Status of Fusion Research and
 Development by Dr. Barry Green
ORGANIZER;CN=Andre Luiten:MAILTO:mailto:pgrc@physics.uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Fusion energy promises to be a major contributor to
future global energy supplies because of the ready availability and
affordability of the basic fuel\, Deuterium\, which makes it a
‘sustainable’ resource. In addition\, fusion appears to be safe\,
environmentally-friendly and cost-competitive with other forms of energy.
Its potential to provide high temperature heat makes it useful for
industrial processing as well as for electricity production. Although the
fusion process was discovered before fission\, the latter has been
successfully developed into power-producing systems which have produced
significant amounts of electricity in many parts of the world for more
than 50 years. The development of fusion has been much more difficult.
\nThis lecture will discuss the development of fusion energy (based on
the magnetic confinement of fusion fuel) with emphasis on the ITER
Project\, the large international fusion experiment at present under
construction in the south of France. It also considers the international
programme not directly tied to the ITER Project and the future design of
a demonstration/prototype fusion reactor. Finally\, it looks at the
opportunities for Australia to become more closely involved with the
 international work\, in particular\, ITER.\n\n\nBiography:Dr. Barry Green
holds a PhD in theoretical plasma physics from the University of Sydney
and for the last 40 years has been involved in the fusion research
programme in the USA\, Europe and Japan. He has held research positions
at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory at Princeton University and
the Max-Planck Institute for Plasmaphysics in Garching\, Germany and
until 1992 was involved in the design\, construction and operation of the
European fusion experiment\, JET (the Joint European Torus) at Culham in
the UK. From 1992-2003 he was part of the engineering design activity of
the ITER Project in Japan. Dr Green has also worked as a scientific
officer in the European Commission Directorate for Energy within the
Directorate-General for Research in Brussels\, coordinating the fusion
programmes of the 12 most recent member states of the European Union.
Returning to Australia in 2007\, he is now working part-time at the
School of Physics\, University of Western Australia.\n\nSpeakers: Dr

SUMMARY:Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology 2009 : Crime
and justice challenges in the 21st century: Victims\, offenders and
 communities
ORGANIZER;CN=Andrew Bird:MAILTO:enquiry@meetingmasters.com.au
DESCRIPTION:The conference title – Crime and justice challenges in the
21st century: Victims\, offenders and communities – encapsulates several
enduring issues facing criminal justice researchers and practitioners in
the early 21st Century. It invites papers seeking to improve our
understanding of social policy and practices surrounding crime\,
victimisation and offending. What is the role of criminal justice
institutions compared with newly co-opted agencies in ‘the fight against
crime’? What conflicts are there between justice and effective crime
reduction? You are invited to participate in these debates and to share
the results of your research\, evaluations and critiques.

SUMMARY:Science Education in the 21st Century : using the methods of
 science to teach science
ORGANIZER;CN=Institute of Advanced Studies:MAILTO:ias@uwa.edu.au
DESCRIPTION:A free public lecture by Nobel Laureate Carl Wieman\,
Director of the Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative\n\nResearch on
how people learn is now revealing how many teachers misinterpret what
students are thinking and learning from traditional science classes and
exams. However\, research is also providing insights on how to do much
better. The combination of this research with modern information
technology is setting the stage for a new approach that can provide the
relevant and effective science education for all students that is needed
for the 21st century.\n\nIn this lecture Professor Wieman will discuss
the failures of traditional educational practices\, even as used by “very
good” teachers\, and the successes of some new practices and technology
that characterize this more effective approach\, and how these results
are highly consistent with findings from cognitive science.
