DESCRIPTION:My Seminar deals with two Aurecon Projects on opposite ends of
the African Continent that might appear widely divergent\, but which are
actually closely related within the domain of IWRM.\n \nNile Basin DSS:
Aurecon is the lead consultant on Pilot Studies on the development and est
ablishment of the NB-DSS\, the primary objective of which is to ensure tha
t the NB-DSS becomes a reliable and sustainable software system. This enta
ils demonstrating and showcasing the NB-DSS capabilities within the contex
t of transboundary\, integrated water resource planning and management in
the Nile Basin. \n\nAurecon and its multi-disciplinary team of experts are
intricately involved with all aspects of the project\, including hydrolog
ical and system analyses\, the quantification of environmental\, social an
d economic impacts associated with large-scale water resource developments
\, advanced multi-criteria analysis across various pilot case areas and ex
tensive training of NB-DSS representatives from all of the Nile riparian c
 ountries. These include\, Egypt\, Ethiopia\, Kenya\, Rwanda\, South Sudan\
 , Sudan\, Tanzania\, Burundi\, Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.\n
\nWestern Cape Water Reconciliation Strategy:    This long-term Project in
volves a review of the rising future water requirements within the supply
area of the Western Cape Bulk Water Resources System\, which supplies wate
r to more than three million people in the Greater Cape Town Region (photo
below). The Project further continuously evaluates a wide range of soft a
nd hard options for meeting these increasing demands. \n\nFurther to the R
econciliation Strategy with its Action Plan\, the Project identifies the m
ost favourable intervention options and recommends a programme of feasibil
ity studies and other investigations to improve the operation and planning
of the system\, and to ensure that the necessary infrastructure or other
interventions were implemented timeously so as to reconcile the supplies w
ith the future demands. \n\nThe reconciliation study also involves scenari
o planning of alternative development options and the development of a Rec
onciliation Planning Support Tool (RPST) which enables the ranking of alte
rnative water resource and water demand intervention options.\n\n\nSHORT B
IO: \n\nAndré holds BSc\, BEng and MEng degrees from the University of Ste
llenbosch and a PhD in engineering from the University of the Witwatersran
d in South Africa. He is currently a Technical Director in the Cape Town
Office of Aurecon\, a global consulting firm\, as well as the Water Resour
ces Management Leader globally in Aurecon. He has 39 years of Water Secto
r experience in academic\, research and consulting roles. \n\nIn the latt
er part of his career he was a full-time and later part-time Professor of
Hydrology and Water Resources at Stellenbosch University. During recent y
ears he has been deeply involved in strategic water resources management p
rojects related to bulk infrastructure planning and design\, institutional
development and policy implementation support\, optimisation of the opera
tion of multi-purpose water resources schemes\; and flood and drought mana
gement. His research focus has encompassed various themes in hydrological
\, hydrodynamic and water resources systems modelling and related decision
support tools\, as well as design flood hydrology. He has produced more
than 50 papers\, publications and research reports. \n\n\nPS* This seminar

DESCRIPTION:A cross-disciplinary forum. \n\nThe importance of water and it
s impact on society will continue to be one of the key challenges for futu
re generations struggling with droughts\, floods and the availability of c
lean drinking water. The need for cross-disciplinary strategies to deal wi
th the global\, financial\, ecological and societal issues is the focus of
this panel\, which will explore the social transformations needed to supp
ort water sensitive cities\, including community attitudes and behavioural
change\, governance and economic assessment practices\, management system

underpinning social norms and behaviours will\, along with scientific rese

DESCRIPTION:Title: Addressing the social-ecological values gap.\n\nAbstrac
 t: \nAddressing the social-ecological values gap - Can we find fisheries m
anagement solutions that work for people and nature?\nThe call for expandi
ng social-ecological science and metrics for sustainability\nwill require
resolving and implementing the issues around the values\, desires\, and no
rms of management participants.\n\nThe theory of values being illuminated
by environmental psychologists and public policy academics have merged int
o a useful framework where worldviews are seen to influence and compete fo
r control of social norms and actions.\n\nIn this lecture\, Tim will discu
ss the current incentives and approaches to\nsolving problems among academ
ics and managers and juxtapose this with the\nsocial-ecological problems a
nd needs of artisanal fisheries in the Indian Ocean and how efforts can be
better resolved and integrated. He recommends a more permissive approach
to values and management options and more focus on directly asking people
what they want in management\, less focus on social-ecological causation\,
and more focus on the outcomes of management\nexperiments.\n\nBio: \nTim
McClanahan is a coral reef ecosystem ecologist with research interests spa
nning the fields of marine protected areas\, food webs\, nutrients\, fishe
ries\, climate change\, resilience\, and the linkages between coral reef e
cosystems and the humans who depend on them. He has spent most of his prof
essional life living and working in Kenya\, and for the last 20 years has
worked as a Senior \nConservation Zoologist for the Wildlife Conservation
Society\, based in\nMombasa\, on the east African coast. His work has focu

oor developing countries.\n\n\nSpeakers: Dr Tim McClanahan

DESCRIPTION:By way of introduction I will review the legacy of the last 10
0 years of "progress. Anthropogenic emissions have triggering new carbon
emission loops. destruction of habitats is leading to species instabilitie
s with potential impacts on food production\, globalization & increasing w
ealth inequality is leading to economic instabilities\, changing food to a
commodity is leading to mental and physical health issues and the massive
increase in our capacity to destroy has shrunk the time scales of destruc
tion to much less that the time scales required for healing. So what are w
 e to do? I shall explore 10 simple suggestions:\n 1. Re-establish co
ntinuity between generations \n 2. Seek harmony rather th
an conflict \n 3. Learn to how live on a fini
te planet \n 4. Re-establish food as part of life
                   \n 5. Introduce carbon/water neutral living
\n 6. Curb wealth inequity\n 7. Foster mental and physi
 cal well being\; curb advertising\n 8. Subdue technology\, re-introd
uce "Creative Loafing"\n 9. Foster local diversity of job opportunit
y\n 10. Preserve the sources of cultural diversity\n\nJorg Imberger i

ssor of Environmental Engineering. Jorg is a winner of two prestigious int
ernational awards\; the Onassis Prize in the category “Man and the Environ
ment” and the Stockholm Water Prize. Jorg’s expertise has also been recogn
ised in a considerable range of Australian research awards. Jorg establish
ed the Centre for Water Research in 1982. Prior to the Centre’s foundation
Jorg held a Gledden Fellowship and a Science Fellowship at the University
of California. Jorg’s initial objective in establishing the Centre for Wa
ter Research was to assess the impact of pollution in the world’s water bo
dies. The Centre has achieved this major objective through the development
of a world leading range of specialised instrumentation. The Centre’s ope
rations now combine three major research objectives: understanding and man
aging the environment\; the development\, evaluation and commercialisation
of scientific instruments\; and support for the water and coastal enginee
ring industries. The combination of these spheres of activity has enabled
the Centre to have a worldwide impact.\n\nSpeakers: Professor Jorg Imberge

DESCRIPTION:The Seminar: The Vice Chancellor has called for “a full review
of pedagogic purpose and practice in 2013\, with the aim of introducing n
ew pedagogies from the beginning of 2015” this aim was subsequently approv
ed by the Academic Board. Unfortunately the primary driver for such chang
e is often how we can do more with less. To plan for the future we need t
o investigate as many possible new ways of teaching as we can\, in an atte
mpt to maintain “pedagogical excellence” in a time of shrinking budgets.
In some cases it is to explore new and exciting teaching methods\, in othe
rs to “know the enemy” and understand the real costs and deficits of alter
native teaching methods.\n\nI will be describing the advantages and disadv
antages of the strange 3D world that is “Second Life”\; its transition fro
m a den of iniquity where fortunes were made and lost on gambling\, prosti
tution and dodgy banking deals (just like real life really) to a mature We
b 2.0 environment used for educational and social purposes. I will cover
the pros and cons of the environment for teaching\, the implications of “v
irtual IP” and a “virtual economy” our plans for the “Virtual School of An
atomy\, Physiology and Human Biology” being built by Jay Jay Jegathesan an
d his team\, and our links with the online medical school run by the Unive

Miranda Grounds and Sarah Dunlop) the Image Analysis lab in APHB and (with
Oron Catts and Miranda Grounds)\, SymbioticA\, where he was scientific di

d independent thought\, Stuart is WA Division President of the NTEU\, Vice
president of UWAASA and was a senate member for 12 years. His research r

over a century. One of the avenues of study provided by this resource is a
stark portrayal of differences in performance style over that period. Thi

DESCRIPTION:Deadwood Reservoir was created in 1931 by impoundment of the D
eadwood River by Deadwood Dam. It is located in west-central Idaho\, USA\,
at approximately 1600 m above sea level\, in an extremely harsh environme
nt where winter temperatures regularly reach 30 degrees below zero. The U.
 S. Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) has historically operated the reservoir for
irrigation water supply\, flood control\, and limited hydroelectric power
production. More recently\, the reservoir has also been used to augment s
tream flows for out-migrating salmon.\n\nIn 2005\, the U.S. Fish and Wildl
ife Service completed a Biological Opinion that required BOR to investigat
e flexibility in its operation of Deadwood Reservoir to improve conditions
for bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) in the Deadwood River and Reservo
ir. In response\, a 5-year investigation of reservoir operations flexibili
ty for Deadwood River and Reservoir was instituted\, including a holistic
watershed assessment\, coupled with adaptive management.\n \nOne of the im
portant management tools developed by the investigation was a coupled thre
 e-dimensional hydrodynamic-ecological model of Deadwood Reservoir (ELCOM-C
AEDYM) that was used to simulate changes in reservoir operations in order
to assess conformance to the terms and conditions of the Biological Opinio
 n. The complexity of ELCOM-CAEDYM required collection and evaluation of su
bstantial amounts of physical\, chemical\, and biological data from Deadwo
od Reservoir and its tributaries. \n\nThis talk will give an overview of t
he main physical and ecological characteristics of Deadwood Reservoir unde
r historical dam operations and illustrate the environmental changes in re
sponse to different operational scenarios simulated with ELCOM-CAEDYM. The

DESCRIPTION:A public lecture by Professor Burdett Loomis\,\nFulbright Flin
ders University Distinguished Chair in\nAmerican Political Science.\n\nThe
American political system was not designed to produce speedy or highly re
 sponsive policy-making. Given the US’s separation-of-powers structure\, a
grossly malapportioned Senate\, and a powerful Supreme Court\, American pr
esidents have often found it difficult to enact their policy agendas or to
respond quickly to major policy problems. Stalemate in US politics has b
ecome increasingly problematic over the past thirty years. The polarizatio
n of party politics is often seen as the major cause of this impasse\, and
the post-1980 growth in partisanship has certainly played a significant r
ole. At the same time\, interest group scholars argue that the proliferati
on of groups and the growth of lobbying has rendered policy-making more di
fficult\, especially given the advantages found within the American system
that favor those opposed to change.\n\nThis lecture examines the roles pl
ayed by parties and organized interests in producing stalemate\, as well a
s introducing the idea that American voters may well play an important par
t.\n\nCost: Free\, but RSVP essential. Book via http://www.ias.uwa.edu.au/

DESCRIPTION:A play rehearsal is interrupted by the arrival of a divided fa
mily who have been abandoned by their creator and are seeking an author\,
‘any author’\, to give them a ‘definitive artistic form’ so their stories
may be staged. While the first performance of Six Characters in Search of
an Author to a Rome audience in May 1921 was almost booed off the stage i
t has gone on to have many successful seasons and is still a major part of
the theatrical repertoire. The play\, in part\, is Pirandello’s attack on
the Italian theatre of the time\, with its actor-managers and star-system
s\, its stock characterisations\, and its standard repertoire of romantic
melodramas. However\, it is a play on many levels. It raises questions abo
ut the nature of reality\, of what constitutes identity\, and how we can g
auge what is truth. On another level it is a hysterical romantic melodrama
about a warring family who live out their emotions on the skin. And\, it
is also a deeply tragic revenge narrative – a tale of betrayal\, adultery\
, suicide and death. Students enrolled in theatre studies at UWA present t
his very physical\, at times comedic\, and often provocatively philosophic
al play\, virtually uncut and unlike many productions\, we choose not to a
ttempt to modernise it into the contemporary world of electronic media.\nD

DESCRIPTION:Sharks have excited the imagination of literary and visual art
ists for centuries. There are literally thousands of references to sharks
in poetry\, drama\, novels\, painting and sculpture. Since the twentieth c
entury they have been appropriated for film\, TV and advertising campaigns
\, but often in ways that have increased the perception of sharks as monst
rous man-eaters.\n\nAn unconscious elision of the real shark\, about which
we still know relatively little\, and the shark within human culture\, ab
out which we all know something\, has generated many misconceptions about
real sharks. Those who work with them closely often refer to them with adm
iration and affection. They are acutely aware of the fact that it is the c
ultural representation of sharks that has facilitated their exploitation\,
some species of which are now on the verge of extinction.\n\nThis lecture
will draw attention to the distinction between the monster that we have c
reated and the real shark. It will explore some of the many representation
s of sharks in a variety of artforms as a means of understanding the compl
ex role of sharks in culture\, the human emotions that they evoke\, and th
e impact of representation on their existence.\n\nVivienne Westbrook is an

DESCRIPTION:Victoria Rogers: John Blacking\, Composer\n\nJohn Blacking (19
28–90) made his mark as an ethnomusicologist and social anthropologist and
his enduring reputation stems from his work in these areas. Yet his inter
ests were more far reaching and included cognition and language\, dance an
 d movement\, the biology of music making\, music psychology\, and – perhap
s surprisingly – composition. The very existence of Blacking’s composition
s raises a number of enticing questions. What was the nature of his musica
l language? What might a study of his compositions tell us about his ethno
musicology? What might his ethnomusicology tell us about his compositions?
These questions give rise to the central focus of this article: the inter
section of Blacking’s composition and ethnomusicology. The article conclud
es that Blacking’s conceptualisation of music as an expression of social p
rocesses and cultural values extended beyond non-Western musics\, infusing
the compositions which he himself created within the musical paradigm of
his own culture. \n\n\nSpeakers: Professor Victoria Rogers\, UWA School of

DESCRIPTION:A public lecture by Dr Thomas Scirghi\, SJ\, 2013 St Thomas Mo
re College Chair of Jesuit Studies.\n\nFrancis I is the first Jesuit pope
in the history of the Catholic Church. Sometimes called the “Pope’s marine
s\,” the Jesuits – formally known as the Society of Jesus – take a special
vow of obedience to the Pope. The Superior General of the Jesuits\, clad
in a black cassock\, has been named “the Black Pope.” Yet the Jesuits prom
ise to refrain from aspiring to hierarchical positions of authority. With
the election of Pope Francis many are asking\, “What is a Jesuit?” and “Wh

DESCRIPTION:Countries don’t get lucky\; people do.\n\nThe Lucky Culture te
lls the story of Australian exceptionalism - the unique national quality t
hat within 200 years of settlement transformed a raw\, unbroken continent
into the great civilisation of the south. \n\nIn the beginning\, Australia
ns were driven by the spirit of progress and united by the faith that huma
n wit and energy could overcome any obstacle. They were ingenious\, hardwo
rking and inventive.\n\nToday\, however\, Australia has a new class of peo
 ple\, a self-appointed elite\, who consider themselves to be smarter\, mor
e sophisticated and better mannered than the rest. This is what Cater call
s the new ‘ruling class’ - a group of people who are changing Australia\,
irrevocably\, and not for the better. Cater fears that what is happening i
n Australia is moving us away from our original notion of who Australians
are - egalitarian\, innovative\, fearless and spirited – instead creating
a more conflicted\, scared and divided nation.\n\nAlmost half a century af
ter Donald Horne first tried to define ‘The Lucky Country’ in his seminal
book\, Nick Cater looks at the country that Australia has become. He argue
s strongly for Australians to resist the ascendency of this emerging class
and to return to our original\, best selves\, aspiring to the principles
of fairness\, egalitarianism and enterprise that first defined us.\n\nWith
a background in sociology\, 30 years experience in journalism and a detac
hed eye for detail\, no one is better placed than Cater to help Australian
 s understand. \n\nPrice: Members / Guests $59\nPrice includes a two-course
lunch with selected wines\, and\npresentation by Nick Cater on ‘The Lucky
Culture’.\n\nHeld in conjunction with UWA Extension. \n\nSpeakers: Nick C

DESCRIPTION:An Inquiring Minds lecture by Oron Catts\, Director\, Symbioti
cA\, Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts\, School of Anatomy and Human
  Biology\, UWA.\n\nIn 1906 Jacques Loeb suggested making a living system f
rom dead matter as a way to debunk the vitalists’ ideas and claimed to hav
e demonstrated ‘abiogenesis’. In 2010 Craig Venter announced that he creat
ed “the first self-replicating cell we’ve had on the planet whose parent i
s a computer”\, the “Mycoplasma laboratorium” which is commonly known as S
ynthia. In a sense Venter claimed to bring Loeb’s dream closer to reality.
What’s relevant to our story is that one of the main images Venter (or hi
s marketing team) chose for the outing of Synthia was of two round culture
s that looked like a blue eyed gaze\; a metaphysical image representing th
e missing eyes of the Golem. These are the first bits of a jigsaw puzzle t

DESCRIPTION:Talk#1\nSensory Trap: Communication and collaboration with hon
eybees in the ultraviolet\n\nDuring this talk Adelaide Cohalan will presen
t ideas that she has been working on as part of her proposal for her final
year Masters project\, Sensory Trap. Sensory Trap intends to explore the
subjective colour perception of the honeybee in comparison to the human b
y attempting to communicate with honeybee workers through ultraviolet pain
tings. By overlaying several different perceptual filters\, she aims to i
nvestigate the complexities of perception and deception in communication b
etween human and non-human animals. Overall this project intends to contri
bute to a body of work that aims to redefine our relationship with our env
ironment and with non-human animals by turning away from an anthropocentri
c view of the world. This project will be carried out in collaboration wi
th the Centre for Integrated Bee Research at the University of WA. \n\nAde
laide Cohalan is currently undertaking the Master of Biological Arts degre
e with SymbioticA at the University of Western Australia. She has previou
sly completed a Bachelor of Science (majoring in Zoology) and a Bachelor o
f Visual Arts (majoring in Painting) at James Cook University in Townsvill
e\, North Queensland.\n\nTalk#2\nThe increasing role of hobbyist and urban
beekeepers in the maintenance of honeybee populations.\n\nIn the past sev
en years more than a billion honeybees have died as a result of Colony Col
lapse Disorder. The health of the honeybee was previously the interest ent
omologists\, evolutionary biologists and beekeepers\, but the recent colla
pse of colonies has created widespread concern. Artists\, designers\, engi
neers\, filmmakers\, popular media and policy makers are increasingly reco
gnizing the role of the honeybees within an ecological\, social and cultur
al context. As a result of this growing awareness\, the traditional model
of maintaining colonies is changing. Hobbyist and urban beekeeping has dra
matically increased in developed countries around the world and offers an
alternative model of colony maintenance. Rooftop apiaries are an increasin
gly popular in cities like London\, Melbourne\, New York City and Paris. I
n Switzerland\, hobbyists maintain the majority of honeybee populations.\n
\nThis talk examines the existing model of honeybee maintenance – one in w
hich a small number of beekeepers maintain the majority of hives – and loo
ks at a potential alternative in which a large number of hobbyists and urb
an apiarists maintain a small number of hives. This model is termed 'crowd
keeping' and takes its cues from Switzerland's success with hobbyist beeke
eping. The presentation will also look at potential needs and requirements
for hobbyists and urban apiarists. The materials and forms of urban apiar
ies need not adhere to the traditions of industrial beekeeping. New hive d
esigns have the potential to increase human engagement with bees and emerg
ing technologies such as 3D-printing may assist in the production of hives
that fulfill the requirements of hobbyists and urban apiarists. \n\nDevon
Ward is a designer\, interdisciplinary researcher and a prospective maste
r of biological art at SymbioticA within the School of Anatomy\, Physiolog
y and Human Biology at the University of Western Australia. He is a graphi
c designer for the Centre for Integrated Bee Research (CIBER) and a member
of the Australian Graphic Design Association. He obtained his bachelor's
of fine arts from the University of Florida and has previously worked as a
print and web designer. His current research investigates the interface b
etween technology and biology.\n\nSpeakers: Adelaide Cohalan & Devon Ward

DESCRIPTION:A public lecture by James O’Byrne\, NOLA.com. \n\nKatrina brou

cedented nature of the collapse of the Federal seawalls protecting New Orl
eans\, and the ensuing human\, social and environmental catastrophe\, burd
ened journalists with extraordinary challenges personal\, ethical and prof
essional. How does a journalist function when he is both a victim of\, and
a witness to\, disaster?\n\nWhat are his or her ethical responsibilities
as a human being\, and how do those responsibilities interface with his jo
b\, when there are so many people in direct and immediate peril? What is t

become even more crucial when one considers the precipitous decline in th

Memorial Buildings\n\nJohn Winthrop Hackett (1848-1916) was born in Irela
nd\, emigrated to the eastern states of Australia\, and then moved to West
ern Australia. He became a member of the Legislative Assembly\, worked to
achieve federation\, and with others achieved the creation of The Universi
ty of Western Australia. He was knighted in 1911\, by coincidence in the y
ear in which an Act of Parliament established this university. After his d
eath his estate was ably managed by Alfred Langler\, and in 1926 the sum o
f £425\,000 became available to build the Winthrop Hall and associated bui
ldings. The architectural features of these buildings are described in the
recently published book The Hackett Memorial Buildings at the University
of Western Australia\, written by the speaker\, and will be illustrated in
  this lecture.\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\nEmeritus Professor John Melville-Jo
nes\, a graduate of Cambridge University\, was appointed to a lectureship
in Classics and Ancient History at UWA in 1957. In addition to teaching th
e regular courses in Classics\, he developed an interest in ancient Greek
and Roman art and architecture\, and taught courses in that area until 201
 1. His research has been concentrated on the coinage of the ancient Greeks
and Romans.\n\nSpeakers: Emeritus Professor John Melville-Jones

DESCRIPTION:Why do people owe political and legal obligations to each othe
r? Why\, for example\, can I be prevented from\npunching you or burning yo
ur house down? Political and legal thinkers generally agree on the nature
of the\nanswer to this question\, even if they disagree on the details. Th
e answer focusses on the state and the\ncommunity. But in this talk\, I ar
gue that this answer is wrong. What is more\, I will suggest that you alre
ady\nknow it is wrong\, or at least that you knew it was wrong before you
were programmed to think otherwise. We\nwill also discover that many other
people knew this\, though most of them have been dead quite a while. The\
ntalk will suggest a better way to understand the political\, the legal (e
specially private law) and our own\nrelations with other people.\n\nAllan
Beever is a professor of law at the University of South Australia. He has

DESCRIPTION:The Agency in Movement symposium employs a variety of discipli
nes to explore the complex relations between movement and vitality.\nMotio
n is observed by attaching a frame of reference to a “body” and measuring
its change in position relative to another reference frame. Therefore\, mo
vement is relative\, means ever changing and is perceived as visceral and
“alive”. The Symposium will include invited speakers from diverse discipl
 ines (art\, performance\, biology\, biophysics\, biomechanics\, and philos
ophy) who will explore and interrogate the conceptual and technical relati
ons between life (biological or artificial)\, movement and perceptions of
"vitality”\, with the hope that some interesting meeting points and/or neg
ations will emerge.\n\nThe symposium stems from an Australian Research Cou
ncil project exploring the use of skeletal muscle tissue which is grown\,
stimulated and activated in a techno-scientific surrogate “body”. This mov
ing twitching (semi) living material evokes\, makes unease\, and asks\, in
sensorial and theoretical means about issues of aliveness and agency. The
project is concerned with onto-ethico-epistemological (Barad 2010) questi
ons about life and the affect created through the phenomenon of movement.\
n\nWe will be probing into the (sometimes) uneasy and undefined areas of s
hifting perceptions of life\, heralded by developments in the life science
s and applied technologies\, coupled with the introduction of engineering
principles into life sciences. In the light of ‘new materialism’\, ‘agenti
al realism’ and when life is becoming a raw material to be engineered\, we
will examine the position and role of movement as agency.\n\nSpeakers inc
lude:\nMonika Bakke\, a philosopher who interrogates cross species and non
-human communication at Adam Mickiewicz University\, Poznan\, Poland.\; An
drew Pelling leads the Laboratory for Biophysical Manipulation at the Univ
ersity of Ottawa\, which experiment with in vitro muscle cells and with ar
tists. Elizabeth Stephens\, a science historian from the Centre for the Hi
story of European Discourses. Elizabeth will analyse some historical disco
urses and understandings in relation to vitalism. Tony Bakker and Gavin P
inniger\, Muscle Physiology\, the University of Western Australia. Stuart
Hodgetts\, a biologist from UWA will contribute to the understanding of th
e neuromuscular interface. Chris Salter\, the Director of the Hexagram Con
cordia Centre for Research\, whose artistic research explore the performat
ive\, focusing on dynamic and temporal processes over static objects and r
epresentations. Jennifer Johung\, will contribute her perspective on perfo
rmance and agency in art (Art History\, the University of Wisconsin Milwau
kee). Oron Catts\, SymbioticA’s Director\, will discuss the demonstrable i
n science and the arts. Gabrielle Decamous\, will look at semi-living mate
rial as a device in undermining the polarized understanding of the world (
Kyushu University\, Japan). Miranda Grounds of UWA provide her extensive k
nowledge in the cell biology aspects of skeletal muscles. Ionat Zurr will
explore an artistically grown and induced semi living movement which atte
mpt to reintroduce a sense of agency. Stelarc\, an Australia artist and Jo
anna Zylinska\, Goldsmith University UK\, will be reflecting on these issu
es in the closing panel.\n\nSpeakers: Monika Bakke\, Andrew Pelling\, Eliz

DESCRIPTION:Language attitudes are inextricably linked to linguistic varia
tion and deeply tied up to groups of people and what is believed about the
 m. The study of people’s beliefs about language\, including evaluations an
d discriminations of language variety\, falls in the area of sociolinguist
ics known as folk linguistics (Preston 2002).\n\nThis talk explores folk l
inguistic accounts by speakers of Anglo-Celtic Australian English\, Argent
inian River Plate Spanish and foreign language learners of Spanish in Aust
ralia. The different attitudinal positions noted in the data are discussed
  vis-à-vis Preston’s (2002: 64) notions of ‘correctness’\, ‘ordinary langu
age’\, ‘dialects’ and ‘errors’. Understanding language attitudes can help
us make sense of who we are and how we are evaluated by others. This semin
ar seeks to make a contribution to this understanding.\n\nAbout Dr Celeste
Rodriguez Louro\n\nCeleste Rodriguez Louro joined UWA Linguistics as Assi
stant Professor in 2011\, after completing a PhD in Linguistics at Melbour
ne University in December 2009. Trained in Argentina\, the USA and Austral
ia\, she specialises in language variation and change in English and Spani
sh. Dr Rodriguez Louro’s research has been consistently funded internally
and externally since 2002. This support has resulted in a growing publicat
ion record\, including two recent publications on discourse-pragmatic aspe
cts of Perth English–a variety previously undocumented in the sociolinguis
tics literature–and the first-ever Corpus of English in Australia.\n\nShe
has been invited to contribute her innovative research to international vo
lumes\, has presented her work at more than 30 peer-reviewed conferences\,
and has been invited to present her research to audiences in Argentina\,
Austria\, Australia\, Canada\, France\, Spain and the USA. Dr Rodriguez Lo
uro has a strong record of international collaborations and has led severa
l panels and workshops on language variation and change.\n\nSolidly linked
to her teaching\, Dr Rodriguez Louro’s research program has been enriched
by contributions from Honours students\, research assistants\, and PhD ca
ndidates. She has received nominations for her Honours supervision and und
ergraduate teaching and has been nominated for a 2012 Young Investigator A
ward. Dr Rodriguez Louro has acted as reviewer to several world- renowned
journals and publishing houses\, has developed a strong record of media ap

DESCRIPTION:Lake Baikal has a unique natural heritage. There is no other w
ater body similar to this huge fresh-water reservoir whose maximum depth e
xceeds 1 mile (1\,600 m). The lake contains about 20% of the world’s unfro
zen freshwater\; more than that held in all of the Great Lakes of North Am
erica.\n\n  \nThe area of Lake Baikal is similar to that of countries such
as Belgium and the Netherlands\, and the bottom-sediment thickness is mor
e than 8 km.  The lake is more than 25 million years old.\n\n \nThese feat
ures and other aspects of the hydrology\, meteorology\, hydrobiology\, and
paleoclimates wll be discussed in this presentation\, using information f
rom the Limnological Institute of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy o

DESCRIPTION:A public lecture by Eric Dursteler\, Associate Professor Histo
ry Department\, Brigham Young University.\n\nOne of the central credos of
food studies is Anthelme Brillat-Savarin’s famous aphorism\, “Tell me what
you eat\, and I will tell you who you are.” What Brillat-Savarin sensed i
ntuitively\, modern scholars have verified: because of the biological impe
rative of daily consumption\, food inheres in a uniquely intimate way in c
ollective and individual identities. Food also marks religion\, where it f
unctions as symbol\, as subject of petition\, and as a form of communion.
\n\nGiven the significance of food in religious practice and identity\, wh
at impact does conversion have on an individual’s foodways? What changes a
ccompany\, or are expected to accompany\, conversion? The experience of th
e Morisco minority in early modern Spain represents a suggestive case-stud
y of the complex ways in which food informed religious and communal identi
ty\, and how the sincerity of religious change associated with conversion
was measured in part by changes in food practices.\n\nThis lecture is supp
orted by the UWA Institute of Advanced Studies and the ARC Centre of Excel
lence for the History of Emotions.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:A lecture by Professor Andrew J. Pitman\, Director of the ARC
Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science\, University of New South
Wales.\n\nThe report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\, in
2007\, stated that there is “considerable confidence that climate models
provide credible quantitative estimates of future climate change\, particu
larly at continental scales and above.” Climate models really are extremel
y useful tools for informing policy makes of how large and how fast climat
e is likely to change in the next 50-100 years at continental scales and a
bove. However\, most decision making to address vulnerability to climate c
hange requires much more detailed information than provided at the contine
ntal scale and requires temporal information around extremes that needs da
ily\, and sometimes hourly information.\n\nThis talk will explain how rese
archers in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science are wor
king to resolve the scale challenge that confronts us. Professor Pitman wi
ll highlight research that is now resolving ocean eddies\, convection proc
esses\, and land surface processes at previously unprecedented spatial and
temporal scales. He will also highlight where the limits remain in provid
ing fine-scale climate projections – limits that are link science challeng
es with high performance computing\, high-volume data and a worrying lack
of quantitative and technologically capable graduate students.\n\nCost: Fr

DESCRIPTION:A public lecture by Christopher Morton\, University of Oxford.
\n\nWanamuchoo was an Aboriginal man brought by a police trooper to Adelai
de for trial in March 1893 for the murder of another Aboriginal man in Inn
amincka\, some 850 miles away. After trial\, he was photographed at the Ci
ty Watchhouse. According to a local newspaper account\, his confusion was
such that ‘when confronted by the camera he appeared to think that it was
some awful instrument of the white man’s vengeance’. A print of this photo
graph was sent by an Adelaide resident\, John Bagot\, in November of that
year\, to the Curator of the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. Some years late
r the Curator mounted the print with a number of others from South Austral
ia\, and added the information that Wanamuchoo had been ‘hanged for the mu
rder of a shepherd’. However\, it is clear from contemporary reports that
he was in fact considered insane at trial and sent to the City Asylum\, wh
ere he seems to have survived a further eleven years\, dying there in Marc
h 1903. The case of Wanamuchoo caused a lively debate in the press of the
day on the topic of the applicability of English law to Aboriginal cases s
uch as this\, and its themes of dislocation\, mistranslation and separatio
n continue to resonate for many Aboriginal people to this day. This lectur
e will show how the current international research project Globalisation\,
Photography and Race: the Circulation and Return of Aboriginal Photograph
s in Europe\, led by Jane Lydon at UWA\, has been exploring visual histori
es held in remote photograph collections such as Oxford\, the ways in whic
h it has attempted to reconnect the images to relevant indigenous communit
ies today\, and the research and curatorial issues that have emerged.\n\nC

DESCRIPTION:A public lecture by Angela Wanhalla\, University of Otago.\n\n
Maori\, the indigenous people of New Zealand\, were a popular subject of t
he photographic trade in the colonial era. As in other colonial societies
where indigenous peoples were captured by the camera\, photographs of Maor
i were collected and traded\, entering into the private collections\, albu
ms and scrapbooks of soldiers\, colonial officials\, scientists and travel
lers\, some of which were lodged in the collections of British museums. Ra
ther than focus on the history of racial science\, photography and museums
in the metropole\, this presentation turns away from the imperial centre
to examine the photographic collections of museums in the colonies.\n\nPho
tographic scholars in New Zealand have studied Maori as the subject of the
camera\, concerned themselves with the trade in such photographs\, looked
at the operation of commercial enterprises in the colony\, and sketched t
he biographies of pioneer photographers. Institutional photograph collecti
ons\, however\, have gained little critical attention. Images of Maori fea
ture heavily in these collections\, with ethnographic motives often claime
d as the reason for their creation. But does the scholarly emphasis on eth
nographic photography in New Zealand marginalise alternative interpretatio
ns of indigenous peoples and their relationship with photography? Drawing
upon historic photographs\, as well as the work of contemporary Maori arti
sts and photographers\, this talk surveys the Maori presence in institutio
nal photographic collections in order to fashion a history of colonial pho
tography through the everyday encounters of indigenous peoples with the me
 dium.\n\nCost: free\, but RSVP required. Visit http://www.ias.uwa.edu.au/l

the environment and productive commercial farming.

mately 15% of all animal protein in the human diet. However\, the world no
w faces a global fishing crisis. According to the UN Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO)\, 70% of all commercially important marine fish stocks
are fully fished\, overexploited\, or depleted. The harvesting of marine f
ish can have genetic effects that threaten the sustainability and potentia
l recovery of this valuable resource. For example\, recent genomics work w
ith Atlantic cod has shown that the observed reduction in size and earlier
age at sexual maturity is at least partially caused by a genetic response
to fishing pressure. To sustain the productivity of harvested marine fish
eries populations\, it is crucial to incorporate genetic considerations in
to management. Management plans should be developed by applying basic gene
tic principles combined with molecular genetic monitoring to minimize harm
 ful genetic change.
