16:00 - PUBLIC TALK - Maths & Stats Colloquium : Deciding that two groups are the same: an update on group isomorphism
|
More Information
|
Groups are mathematical objects that abstractly capture the concept of symmetry. Two groups are isomorphic if they essentially describe the same data, but they might be given with respect to different frames of reference. More specifically, two groups are isomorphic if there is a 1-to-1 correspondence between their elements that preserves the group operations. The group isomorphism problem is a decision problem that asks whether two given groups are isomorphic. This problem is of interest in theoretical computer science (with focus on the complexity of the problem) and in computational group theory (with focus on practical algorithms). My talk will survey some known results and comment on some recent new results, covering both complexity theory and practical applications to computer algebra systems.

Ambassador Myroshnychenko joined Ukraine's foreign service after two decades helping international clients develop solid relationships with the stakeholders in the government, civil society and local community in Ukraine. Ambassador Myroshnychenko is focussed on enhancing Ukraine-Australia bilateral relations through military cooperation, trade and investment, culture, education and tourism.
Ambassador Myroshnychenko will discuss his reflections on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the reaction of the international community, and Australia-Ukraine relations.
While this event will inevitably have considerable focus on the current situation in Ukraine, Ambassador Myroshnychenko is also interested in exploring how Western Australia and Ukraine might work together more closely in a post-war reconstruction phase, and over the long term through increased bilateral trade and investment.
This public event will take place in the theatre-auditorium located at The University Club of Western Australia. Please register your attendance as places are limited.

Also on the program, Honours student Rachael Liu and recent honours graduate Gabrielle Scheggia will sing some gems from the rich song repertoire, including works by Mozart, Schubert, Clara Schumann, and Haydn’s dramatic cantata Arianna a Naxos.

19:00 - PERFORMANCE - The Duel : Presented by West Australian Opera in association with UWA Music

More Information

In 1786 a standoff was held in one of the world’s most lavish palaces. Joseph II (Holy Roman Emperor) set his composers a challenge, pitting the Italian opera style against the German ‘singspiel’. With both pieces performed on the same night, more than pride was at stake. The winner would be feted with commissions and patrons; the loser, fighting for scraps.
In one corner, the established Antonio Salieri set an opera buffa entitled Prima la musica e poi le parole (First the Music, then the Words), and in the other corner the upstart Wolfgang Mozart flew the nationalistic flag with his comedy Der Schauspieldirektor (The Impresario).
For this re-creation, we invite you to get up close and personal in the intimate surrounds of Government House Ballroom with stages at either end, dinner with your friends and a time machine back to the eighteenth century. Decide for yourself who wins – Mozart or Salieri?
ARTISTS: WA Opera | UWA Chamber Musicians

13:00 - SEMINAR - Boosting immune resilience to newborn sepsis with the pathogen-agnostic effects of BCG : School of Human Sciences Seminar Series
|
More Information
|
The newborn period, or the first 30 days of life, is the most vulnerable time in the human lifespan with sepsis, or severe infections, a leading cause of newborn death. Globally, over 3 million newborns are diagnosed with sepsis each year, and up to 19% of them die. Vaccines have worked miracles in reducing mortality in later childhood by focussing on the pathogen – in other words, one vaccine for one microbial threat. Unfortunately, there are too many different pathogens that infect newborns, making specific vaccines for each one not feasible. Thankfully, emerging evidence suggests that boosting immune resilience to many pathogens at once is possible. For example, research done by the Bandim Health Project in Guinea Bissau showed that Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG), the vaccine against tuberculosis, reduces newborn mortality even when no tuberculosis is present. We identified how BCG, within days of being given, boost levels of newborn white blood cells that fight a wide range of invading pathogens. Our current work is focussed on optimizing this effect, as it does not work for all newborns. Early findings suggest that this relates to the metabolic state of the newborn. We anticipate that insight into the underlying mechanisms that ‘license’ BCG to work will offer opportunities to make BCG work for all - immune equity in action.
