In this artist's talk, Richard Lewer discusses his works Never shall be forgotten – a mother’s story (2017) and Worse Luck I am Still Here (2014) currently on show in Love, Displaced.

Richard Lewer is a Melbourne-based visual artist who works with video and animation, painting, drawing and performance. He is known for his video and animation, paintings, and delicately beautiful drawings, which evocatively rework some of life’s less pleasant elements – crime scenes, illness, horror movies and extreme events. The artists featured in the exhibition Love, Displaced cover a variety of video art genres. In this professional development workshop, visual art educator Erin Knight introduces the education kit for Love, Displaced, exploring how video media has been manipulated by artists in deeply personal ways that assist in communicating with their audiences. This workshop prepares you to bring your students to view the exhibition and experience a close reading exercise using the education resources. UWA Campus Partner: Perth Festival

In this talk, Carrolup Revisited curator and Berndt Museum Associate Director Vanessa Russ shares insights about curating the exhibition, the artists and stories associated with the artworks.

This week: Pedro Alvarez | Notation as transcription, composition as translation

Abstract: Music composition will be discussed in its dialectical situation between transcriptive and generative functions of notation. Analysing different approaches to such functions in recent compositional practices for context, I will present my most recent creative work.

Bio: Pedro Alvarez is an independent composer, improviser, and scholar, born in Chile and currently based in Western Australia. His creative work focuses on new forms of sonic narrative made of static situations, articulating simplicity of form in contrast with highly detailed textures. Research interests include aesthetics and politics, postcolonialism, and musical thinking since the 1960’s. Alvarez studied composition with Cirilo Vila in Santiago, with James Dillon in London, and with Liza Lim in Huddersfield, obtaining a PhD in 2014.

He has been hosted as composer-in-residence in Vienna and in Mexico, and receives commissions from festivals and ensembles around the world.

The art of Hieronymus Bosch is populated with many sinners and few saints, lots of devils and little angels, and strawberries. What to make of this topsy-turvy world? The Garden of Earthly Delights is probably one of the most enigmatic artworks ever produced: can we unlock its meaning? And what is the significance of the owl that reappears in almost every painting by the Dutch artist? This lecture sheds light on the dark wit and wild imagination of the 'devil’s painter' Hieronymus Bosch.

Join Gregory Rowbotham for a short journey through the history of astronomy and big telescopes and learn how and why astronomers collect different types of light to study our universe. He will also discuss the Square Kilometre Array, the world’s largest telescope soon to be under construction in Western Australia.

Gregory Rowbotham is the Cosmos Consultant within the Outreach and Education Team at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR). An avid science communicator, he shares his love of all things space in his talk.

Pharmacy has purchased a number of Aboriginal art works to be displayed in its building. This Harmony Week event is an unveiling of these paintings, followed by afternoon tea.

Medieval and early modern people were fascinated with the heavens. In an illustrated talk, Andrew Lynch explores the nature of the early cosmos in religious, philosophical and scientific thought, and its influence on literature and the arts, with effects lasting until present day.

Andrew Lynch is Emeritus Professor in English and Literary Studies at UWA, and former Director of the ARC Centre for the History of Emotions. His recent publications include, as co-editor, A Cultural History of Emotions, 6 vols, (Bloomsbury, 2019).

Join WA paper cutting artist Tusif Ahmad in learning the ancient art of paper cutting. Tusif will be joined by artist Osama Mah fellow participant of the Centre for Muslim States and Societies (CMSS) and Department Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Council of Australian Arab Relations sponsored Rekindling Tour of Islamic Artisans in Morocco during November 2018. The artists bring to light an increased appreciation for what we know as traditional 'Islamic arts'. Alongside Tusif, Osama Mah will be writing (for example, your name) in Arabic calligraphy.
