What's On at UWA

You are invited to join us mark the 100th anniversary of the first meeting of the University of Western Australia’s Convocation.

The First meeting was held on March 4th 1913 in St George’s Hall, Hay St near the corner of Irwin Street. The historic façade including the portico, steps and tall white columns were restored when the new Perth District Court was constructed behind it at 500 Hay Street. To celebrate the Centenary of this meeting, a photo-shoot of 100 'graduates' will take place on the steps of the façade at 10am on Monday March 4th 2013.

The UWA Historical Society would be delighted if you could join us.

If you have academic robes, please bring them. If not please come anyway, as having just a few robed members will provide the ‘flavour’. Balloons for a joint release will be provided.

Monday March 4th is a public Holiday (Labour Day). There should be nearby street parking available and there is a public parking station across the road at King’s Hotel.

The “21st century microscope” will not be a single instrument; rather it will be an orchestration of specialised imaging technologies, data storage facilities, and specialised data processing engines. This presentation will detail two complimentary national projects that are creating an integrated computer environment for researchers who work with imaging data.

This seminar, presented by Dr Wojtek Goscinski on Wed 6 March 2013 from 3-4pm at the ARRC Auditorium, will describe MASSIVE and the CVL, highlight research that is being conducted using these environments and the technology that underpins them, and will describe the key challenges of developing a supercomputer program for the characterization community.

This course aims to provide you with an introduction to the facilities available in MS Excel from a statistical point of view. As well as an introduction to Excel, spreadsheet functions and graphics, it concentrates on performing basic statistical methods, producing charts and tables, and discusses the limitations of Excel when it comes to more complex statistical analysis.

Discount fees are available to UWA Postgraduate Research Students.

As part of our continue tradition free screening, this week the University Physics Society will be screening the film Memento, directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Guy Pierce, Carrie-Ann Moss and Joe Pantoliano. What this got to do with physics? Not much but we promise it will be good fun!

Join us in the UCC clubroom for a talk on technology by one of our members. John Hodge gives us a description of how computer programs become electrical signals, from C down through assembly, binary and to logic gates.

Applied mathematicians are often accused of screwing around with the ideas pure colleagues had. In this talk I am going to prove that sometimes this accusation is true. Using a network of social interactions I will show how we can model the spread of a sexual transmitted disease in a society. While most of the work has been done by research groups in Europe, the results are similar to some of Michael Small who worked on SARS modelling that I will mention as well.

'What Matters to me and why' is a series of lunch time talks and conversations with UWA Academics. The talks explore personal stories of family, place, formative influences and how such factors continue to shape people's lives and academic work.

The next conversation is with Winthrop Professor John Dell, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Professor Dell will share some of his story and then there will be the opportunity for questions/conversation. BYO Lunch. Tea/Coffee will be available in the meeting room. At the request of the Science Library, please don’t carry drinks through the library.

Ethical hacking is an area of Computer Science and Security Science that deals with finding and fixing security vulnerabilities in computer systems. We will discuss methods and the use of some tools for penetration testing and social engineering issues. These talks usually bring up all kinds of moral/ethics discussions, so we'll leave plenty of time for Q&A - and some interesting facts about privacy will also be revealed.

Statistical meta-analysis deals with a variety of sophisticated statistical methods to efficiently combine the results of several studies that have a common target. In this course, we will describe the basic concepts of effect size for continuous measurements as well as qualitative attributes, combination of tests and estimates of effect size, tests for homogeneity of effect sizes, fixed versus random effects model of meta-analysis, combination of Gallup polls, meta-analysis of binary data, meta-regression, and publication bias.

The aim of this course is to introduce you to basic statistics. It will cover descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations); data exploration; basic categorical data analysis; simple linear regression and basic analysis of variance (ANOVA).

The course is subsidised for UWA postgraduate research students.
