Abstract: The long-term viability of groundwater resources relies on having a strong grasp of groundwater recharge mechanisms. Often overlooked in groundwater recharge studies is the temporal variability of groundwater recharge. This is because it is often difficult to obtain measurements on a scale that represents the time frames of variability. Groundwater age represents the time since groundwater recharge occurred, and hence accurately determining groundwater ages offers great insight into recharge processes. In this presentation, Jim will present the theory of how groundwater ages can identify recharge variability. Secondly, he will identify if this variability is detectable using field measurements of chemical species in groundwater. Finally, he will present a case study from the Pilbara region of northwest Australia to demonstrate how groundwater ages can identify recharge variability. Biography: Jim is an ARC DECRA Research Fellow in the School of Earth Sciences, UWA working on a project investigating the use of groundwater age tracers to determine recharge variability. Jim received a PhD from Flinders University in 2014 with a thesis investigating the quantification of groundwater ages in heterogeneous aquifers. Prior to completing his PhD, he worked as a consultant and at the CSIRO’s Land and Water Urrbrae Laboratory in Adelaide, where his main research interest was the quantification of surface water-groundwater interactions. His research also extends to numerical methods for simulating solute transport and groundwater ages.
