School of Human Sciences Seminar Series : Inflammation and Immune response in muscle diseases Other events...
Infiltration of immune cells in skeletal muscle is one of the common histological features of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (e.g., Polymyositis, Dermatomyositis and Inclusion Body Myositis) as well as some genetic muscle diseases (e.g., Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy 2B). Muscle weakness and damage in these disorders are thought to occur due to immune cell mediated injury to skeletal muscle. However, relative contribution of immune (e.g., adaptive, innate) and non-immune mechanisms (e.g., metabolic) to muscle weakness is not known in these disorders. Our laboratory for the last two decades has systematically investigated the role of innate immune and metabolic pathways and their contribution to muscle weakness using mouse models of these disorders. This presentation will review current state of immune and inflammatory pathways, emerging role of metabolic pathways, potential therapeutic targets as well as discuss putative role of immune response to dystrophin after gene correction strategies such as exon skipping in DMD.
