SEMINAR: Anthropology/Sociology Seminar series

Imagine you do research on the wellbeing of casual employees at your university and you discover several irregularities in how the university employs temporary instructors. Would you continue your research and try to publish it even though you suspect your own position may be at risk as a result of this?
This presentation discusses the ethical challenges of doing research that is critical of the researcher’s own institution. The conclusions of this paper invite a broader reflection on the purpose of social scientists’ work. Are they doing research to make a positive difference in their own lives (e.g. stable income) or in the lives of others, or both? To answer these questions I embark on a journey through science, political economy, organisational behaviour and Greek mythology.
