Connecting with Nature in the City: nonmaterial benefits from urban green space in Perth Other events...
What’s your favourite green space in Perth? What makes it special? Do you connect with nature in the city, how does it happen and does it even matter? These are the sorts of questions that Dawn has been exploring for her PhD and this talk will present some of the findings from her work so far. Urban green spaces like parks, bush reserves and backyards are often some of the few areas where people in cities can interact with the natural environment. Semi-structured interviews conducted with green space users found that people often refer to their favourite green spaces in terms of nonmaterial benefits like beauty, relaxation, social interaction, and discovery. This talk will outline some of the factors that influence these benefits and whether people connect with nature in the city. As more of us choose to live in cities, being able to connect with nature in urban green space will become increasingly important, for its potential to influence people to care more for nature and unlock multiple advantages for wellbeing.
