World Malaria Day is coming up but what do you actually know about malaria? Malaria is a major health risk, it kills over 500,000 people annually. Most of these deaths are children and most are in the developing world. Malaria is a parasitic infection spread by the Anopheles mosquito and has been with humans for most of human history. This presentation explores what malaria is, why it is a problem and how malaria is currently being dealt with in terms of prevention and treatment. The presentation will also discuss work being done in Albany on malaria in Borneo.
Dr Peter Speldewinde is a lecturer at the University of Western Australia’s Albany campus. One of his current research projects is examining the impact of tropical forest restoration on malaria in Sabah, Borneo.
