UWA Albany Public Lecture : Longing for the past: Social media and lost heritage Other events...
The last five years have seen a rapid rise in the use of social media. Amongst the immensely popular groups that have sprung up on Facebook are some that focus exclusively on historic places that have now disappeared as a result of demolition and redevelopment. But few of those who participate in these social media groups are trained historians, curators, archivists or librarians. They are simply people who enjoy looking at, remembering and discussing places from the past that are long gone. Professor Gregory has been analyzing several Facebook groups that focus on such lost places in major cities across the globe, including the old world city of Edinburgh and new world city of Perth. She has been interested to investigate how individuals use Facebook to remember the past, and determine if this is an engagement with history or nostalgia?
