"Hysteria" has meant many things over time but it was only briefly synonymous with histrionics, and it soon came to describe ‘physical symptoms for which there was no medical explanation’.
This discussion will explore the development of the idea, from Sigmund Freud's seminal contribution to the understanding of this phenomenon. We will then look at its current clinical status, and the implications for modern medical practice.
