The Seminar: Following completion of her PhD in cellular electrophysiology at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Livia Hool undertook 2 years’ postdoctoral research as recipient of an American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellowship in the School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. In 1998 she was awarded a Peter Doherty Fellowship from NHMRC then relocated to The University of Western Australia where she established the Cardiovascular Electrophysiology Laboratory. She is currently recipient of an NHMRC Senior Research Fellowship, Faculty-at-Large of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute in Sydney, President of the International Society for Heart Research Australasian Section and Founding Director and General Secretary of the Australian Cardiovascular Alliance.
The Speaker: Cardiomyopathy is characterized by myocyte remodelling, disorganization of cytoskeletal proteins and altered energy metabolism. The L-type Ca2+ channel is the main route for calcium influx and is crucial to cardiac excitation and contraction. The channel also regulates mitochondrial function in the heart by a functional communication between the channel and mitochondria via the cytoskeletal network.
We activate the L-type Ca2+ channel to report mitochondrial function in the murine myocyte and demonstrate that altered energy states exist in the dilated versus hypertrophic heart.
This information allows us to design phenotype-specific treatments.
