Water for Western Australia's Future : 2016 ATSE Eminent Speaker Series Other events...
A public lecture by Sue Murphy, CEO, Water Corporation of Western Australia and the 2016 ATSE Eminent Speaker.

Southwest WA has been hit by climate change harder and faster than nearly anywhere else on the planet.

Since the 1970's, Perth's rainfall has reduced such that last winter Perth's dams received the lowest inflow from rain since records began more than 100 years ago.

At the same time, the population has increased by a staggering 152 percent since 1972 and we still want to maintain our quality of life in this beautiful part of Australia.

Due to foresight and careful planning, Water Corporation is attracting global attention with its approach of investing in new water sources that are completely independent of rainfall.

Using innovative technology such as Australia's first full-scale Groundwater Replenishment Scheme, WA's principal supplier of water in one of the driest corners of the Earth expects to achieve this remarkable goal by 2022.

In this lecture, Water Corporation Chief Executive Officer Sue Murphy reflects on how, in just a few generations, Perth's water supply has changed from being completely reliant on dams and rainfall, to supplying more than two million people with drinking water without the need to pray for rain.

This annual lecture is presented by the UWA Institute of Advanced Studies and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE).
