Steve Reich has been described by the New York Times as our greatest living composer and this performance marks the 40th anniversary of his 1976 work Music for 18 Musicians; a wonderfully joyous work that significantly influenced developments in music in the twentieth century.
What makes Music for 18 Musicians so special is that it is so unique. Reich’s music is described as minimalist music – but there is nothing small about this work. It takes you on an hour long journey of melodies and rhythms, but when it finishes it is as if no time has passed.
Performed by an outstanding ensemble comprising faculty, undergraduate and postgraduate students from the UWA School of Music, this is a rare performance not to be missed.
