Vladimir Belogolovsky’s talk, “Curating Architecture” is a part of his 2014 lecture tour across universities in Asia and Australia. The lecture is a work in progress. It presents and analyzes some of the most critical and transformative events and tendencies in the culture of curating, exhibition making, and exhibition design from around the world. Architecture has been more than the sum of its parts; it is a discourse, a spatial experiment, a celebration of technological breakthroughs, a manifesto, and certainly a quest for discovering original means of artistic expression. Architecture can be almost anything our imagination may allow it to be. Curating architecture therefore is critical. Curating is manifested in exhibition making, which in its own right, can and should take as many forms and expressions as possible. The historical context of exhibition making, culture of display and mediation, and the emergence of contemporary curatorial discourse are the subject of this presentation. Since 2008, Belogolovsky has been a full-time independent curator with diverse international projects, both commissioned and self-initiated. In addition to examining various critical historical precedents such as solo, group, theme exhibitions, and biennials, he will discuss his own curatorial trajectory in a form of exhibitions, books, interviews, and lectures that explore a wide spectrum of topics – from social and sustainable projects, signature and performative buildings to regional vs global architecture, and such themes as spectacle and celebrity status of today’s leading practitioners. The following questions will be explored: What is architecture? Are we still in the age of the iconic building? What is the role of an architect? What is curating? How does one become a curator? What is the role of a curator? What is an exhibition? What is the goal of an exhibition? What is worth exhibiting? What is the role of a museum? What is the place for architectural criticism in the age of pluralism, pure praise, and advertising? When was starchitecture born and when did it die, or did it? Is there common ground in contemporary architecture? Where do architects find their ideas? What is the goal of architecture?
