In 1965 the Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Commission made a socially and economically just decision to award Equal Wages to Northern Aboriginal Pastoral Workers; men and women who had lived and worked for long under a welfare based, but largely unpaid social regime.
However the consequences were not perhaps what the Commission hoped for, for reasons which I will examine and illustrate.
In the second case, in 1989, the Australian Federation of of Airline Pilots sought a wage rise of 29.47% in the midst of an industrial climate of severe wage restraint.
They might have hoped this would be seen as an ambit claim but the two domestic airlines chose to treat it at face value with unfortunate and sometimes little known consequences for many pilots and their families.
