The 2014 Reid Oration will be given by Stephen Smith Winthrop Professor of International Law at The University of Western Australia, and former Australian Defence and Foreign Affairs Minister.
Great change in our region - the rise of China, the rise of the ASEAN Economies combined and the rise of India - has seen over the last decade an inevitable focus on the implications of this change for Australia’s Foreign, Defence and National Security policy approach. Less emphasis has to date focussed on what domestic public policy and public administration implications this great transformation of our region has for Australia and its constituent States and Territories, including our own State of Western Australia. What domestic implications do such regional, indeed global, trends have, for example, for education, for State economies and their diversification, or indeed, for domestic public administration itself? Stephen Smith, Winthrop Professor of International Law at UWA will consider these issues, including how Professor Gordon Reid himself may have viewed such issues.
The Reid Oration is co-sponsored by the UWA Institute of Advanced Studies and the Institute of Public Administration Australia WA and honours Professor Gordon Reid’s contribution to public life. Professor Reid was Professor of Politics for many years at The University of Western Australia as well as serving as Deputy Vice-Chancellor. From 1984-1989 he was Governor of Western Australia.
