In this special 'On the Edge' forum, three marine experts from the UWA Oceans Institute will discuss the ‘science of sharks’.
Panellists
Winthrop Professor Shaun P. Collin, UWA Oceans Institute, the School of Animal Biology and IAS Distinguished Fellow;
Research Associate Professor Nathan S. Hart, UWA Oceans Institute and the School of Animal Biology;
Dr Ryan Kempster UWA Oceans Institute and the School of Animal Biology.
Sharks are an ancient group of vertebrates that have roamed the world’s oceans for nearly 400 million years. In evolutionary terms, these cartilaginous fishes have been very successful, playing an important role in a range of marine and freshwater ecosystems.
The Neuroecology Group at UWA has been involved in a large number of research projects on sharks, all striving to understand their biology, the neural basis of their behaviour and recently in developing sensory deterrents to protect humans from the species responsible for a number of fatal shark attacks that have occurred off the coast of WA.
This Forum will showcase the exciting scientific research underpinning these projects and reveal the importance of using basic knowledge to inform applied outcomes.
