SEMINAR: Ecological and recreational values of the Swan River
|
|
The Swan Canning River System is a highly valued part of the Western Australian environment. The river is used for a wide range of recreational activities, and is also important in terms of its ecology. This study aims to estimate the value of both recreational and ecological attributes of the river using choice experiments. The valuation compares the preferences of the West Australian community with those of river experts. Different payment vehicles are also considered in the choice experiment: an ‘increased cost’ payment, where the respondent is asked to pay for environmental improvements from their own pocket; and a ‘budget reallocation’ payment, where respondents are able to reallocate dollars within the State Government budget. We find that people are willing to pay to protect ecological and recreational features of the river using both forms of payment; however, there are differences in willingness to pay between the public and expert samples.
