Asian Studies Seminar Series : Education for character building and citizenship in Indonesia |

The Indonesian government recently introduced “character building” as a central focus of school curricula. This seminar surveys the main literature on education for character building and morality, to see how the new Indonesian version of character education both borrows and departs from the established discipline of character education. The second half of the seminar examines the impetus for the innovation, and explores the new Curriculum, focusing on the new subject, Religious and Character Education. The Indonesian pairing of character education with religious education, rather than with citizenship education, is unusual internationally today. There is considerable emphasis in Curriculum 2013 on honesty, and respect for and obedience to parents and teachers. We can also see the influence of global, neoliberal capitalism, in values such as self-belief. The new approach to character education taken by the Indonesian government is a hybrid of traditional, religious character education, the historical concern with fostering patriotism and the creation of national unity, and a new wave of aspirational and inspirational religious feeling, informed by the personal development literature and fed by the demands and opportunities offered by the booming economy.
