Title: Ocean observing systems: challenges and opportunities
Abstract:
Ocean observing systems are developing on a variety of scales around the world. Funding, spatial scales and technology all present
challenges to developing and sustaining effective observing systems. Australia has led the way with instruments in the water and is a model
for continental scale systems. Smaller systems in particular catchments and estuaries address local needs and have developed local
presences. New models for organizing and recognizing effectiveness may be needed to establish a long term basis for ocean observing.
A new ocean observing system for the Red Sea is being planned beginning with a prototype system that will evolve into a basin wide
monitoring and modeling system.
